Gerard Way on MCR’s Contribution to Watchmen: “…it’s integral to the ending of the film”

So, if you don’t know by now, My Chemical Romance has recorded a cover of Bob Dylan’s Desolation Row for the upcoming film version of the classic graphic novel Watchmen. And while originally it was thought that the song would play over the end credits, apparently things have changed in a major way.

Guys: NO, REALLY, GIVE US SOME NEW PHOTOSHOOTS.

“I don’t want to say too much but as far as the placement right now, it’s integral to the ending of the film…And that gave me goose bumps, and not because we did the song, but because it works that well I feel. I’ve seen the part that we’re integral to — we’re talking about the very end,” Way said in an interview with MTV’s Splash Page. And of course, trusting Gerard’s opinion on comics is a pretty good idea, after all, his own series, The Umbrella Academy, just saw the release of the first issue of it’s second series, Dallas. The first series, Apocalypse Suite, won an Eisner award for Best New Series earlier this year.

But Gerard isn’t just a writer when it comes to comics, he’s also a fan. And like many Watchmen fans, he’s got a lot to say about the big change made to the ending of the film: namely, the removal of one giant squid.

“I personally loved the giant squid – and I’ve always loved giant squids (author’s note: apparently, liking Giant Squids is a Way family trait or something) – but from what I’m hearing, the changes he’s made reels it into the actual characters, and actually, in some ways, makes more sense,” he said. “You’ve always got to remember, the comic’s the comic, and the film’s the film. First of all, I don’t think it’s going to be bad, but if something like that were to happen, the comics still my comic. It does things in the comic that you’ll never do in a film. And that’s just what it is.”

These are probably good thoughts for Gerard to keep in mind, since The Umbrella Academy is set to be turned into a movie as soon as possible. Rumors have placed the release date as early as 2010. But no matter what, Gerard’s got a few other things to occupy his mind these days: My Chemical Romance is working on their next album and his wife is working on incubating the newest addition to their family.

How do you feel about all of this? By which I mean Gerard Way, the Watchmen movie, and giant squids.
