Nightmare Of You @ Knitting Factory + A Better Trace Cyrus For Y’all

There are a few thing that made me like Nightmare Of You initially. They were support from some other band I was seeing and the lyrics to “MyName Is Trouble” caught my attention (“This is the last time that I’ll hold your hand / I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you I’m your biggest fan”).

Also, their first CD cover was pretty:

But their 2nd CD cover? Even better. I have this weird obsession with looking at pictures of bookcases, so you might understand what this does for me:

The bookcases! The font! The title! It all agrees with me.

So I went to go see them at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood on Saturday night.

Nightmare of You is an interesting band. It’s like if you put a bunch of band dudes with a slight scene influence on an island and they decided to stay there. Their music is like, chill, but not without agony. (I’ll review the CD closer to the drop date, which is August 4th). They remind me of The Matches with less nervous energy.

My pictures came out like crud, but my fav part of their show was when they had a guest bongo player and a guest tamborinist. Is that even a word? He also did some magic on a Mac. It was a party up there.

The rest of the show was all right, but everytime I snapped a picture of (lead singer) Brandon Reilly, he looked like he was in pain. Not having fun. He SAID we were a great crowd and that they were so happy to play L.A., I just didn’t buy it completely. They played a few of my favorite songs–“My Name Is Trouble”, “Thumbelina”, and “The Days Go By Oh So Slow” or something like that.

They were selling their CD on the tour, so if you want it early…

Oh, and let me tell you about the band who supported them: Plushgun. This band you might like. It was composed of Seth Rogen, Trace Cyrus and a drummer who never took off his aviators. Ok, that’s a lie. Not the aviators guy, but Seth Rogen doppleganger? Absolutely:

And the upgraded Trace Cyrus doppleganger–his bangs were ALWAYS IN HIS FACE but I did my best. Check him out:

Real men play the xylophone

Cute, no? So please, take that lanky Cyrus man off your crush list, and put this guy in. He wears tank tops. He has emo bangs. He has tattoos. And were there a magnetic forcefield, his face wouldn’t be ripped off. Just sayin’.

ALSO–Plushgun had a song that involved a ukelele. Adorable!

You can check out Nightmare of You and Plushgun if/when they roll through your ‘hood. The rest of their summer tour dates are here.
