By the time Andrew Jackson started planning his re-election campaign in 1832, his personal and professional relationship with Vice President John C. Calhoun had soured to the point that he chose not to select the man as his running mate. This meant Calhoun’s term was originally supposed to end in March 1833, but he decided to resign on December 28, 1832, so he could rejoin the Senate instead.
