Although they became popular enough to spawn a (bad) movie in 1987, The Garbage Pail Kids were mired in controversy as soon as their trading cards came out. But while parents were displeased with the gross nature of the cards, the Los Angeles Times reported that the real backlash came from Original Appalachian Artworks, who produce the Cabbage Patch Kids. They sued for copyright infringement and halted the Garbage Pail Kids’ original run until the company behind them sufficiently changed their designs.
