Surprise! Epic On-Screen Kisses That Were Unscripted And Others That Were A Long Time Coming
A kissing scene can be an epic surprise, whether it's scripted or not. Some of the most famous smooches were originally unplanned; the actors just happened to be "in the moment," they had a crush on their co-star (yes, we mean you, Woody Harrelson), or the showrunners decide to give fans what they've been waiting for -- a long-awaited romance.
Either way, these epic on-screen kisses were a total surprise!
Tom Cruise Forgot His lines In Top Gun
The kiss between Maverick and Charlie might be one of the most beautifully corny love scenes in filmmaking history, and it was totally improvised. When Charlie finally catches up with Maverick, telling (yelling) at him that she doesn't want people to know she's falling for him, actor Tom Cruise freezes.
He actually forgot his line! Instead, he takes actress Kelly McGillis and kisses her. The filmmakers like the improved scene so much they kept it in the movie.
Surprise! This Game Of Thrones Kiss Wasn't Scripted
There might be a lot of kissing happening in Game of Thrones, but, surprisingly, there is one smooch that wasn't actually in the script. In the season seven episode "Stormborn," Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand share an intimate moment below deck.
According to the two actresses, the kiss was totally improvised and just felt right in the moment. Per the script, all the two women were supposed to do was flirt. But one thing led to another!
Helena Bonham Carter In A Room With A View
Actress Helena Bonham Carter was only 18-years-old when she was asked to improvise a last-minute kiss on the set of A Room with a View. According to the actress, kissing her co-star, Julian Sands, was way harder than it looks on-screen.
Apparently, Carter was having enough trouble walking in a field with heels on that she was sure she was going to laugh when she began kissing Sands. Thankfully, she didn't, and they got the shot.
"No One's Ever Really Gone" In Star Wars: The Last Jedi
If there is one scene in Star Wars: The Last Jedi that almost had fans tearing up, it's the final moments between Luke and Leia. In the scene, Luke is saying goodbye to his sister, telling her, "no one's really gone" before kissing her on the forehead.
That tender moment between brother and sister was actually all Mark Hamill's idea. According to the actor, he was "in the moment" and the kiss on her forehead felt like the right thing to do.
Woody Kissed His Crush In The Hunger Games
While filming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Woody Harrelson went way off script and kissed Elizabeth Banks. She had no idea it was going to happen! Harrelson hasn't exactly fessed up to his reasoning behind the smooch, but it wasn't exactly a hardship on his part.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor said, "I have a crush on Elizabeth Banks. I'm not going to lie. I think she's a beautiful woman, I think she's a marvelous actress, and I just love her as a person."
Stranger [Things] Kisses Have Happened
Fans were stunned when Max not only kissed Dustin in season three of Stranger Things, but also one of his best friends, Lucas. It was no secret the two boys had a crush on the new girl, but that doesn't mean the kiss, or one of the kisses, was planned.
In fact, the second kiss, the one between Lucas and Max, wasn't originally in the cards. Apparently, the scene started as a joke between the actress and the Duffer Brothers. They found her freaked-out reaction funny so they made it reality.
The Kiss In Edge Of Tomorrow "Just Felt Right"
When a person only has one ally in the world, they're probably going to kiss at some point in time. Unfortunately, the filmmakers of Edge of Tomorrow were struggling to find an organic place to put a kiss between Tom Cruise's character William Cage and Emly Blunt's character Rita Vrataski.
Eventually, they gave up on the idea, as nothing seemed to be working. Well, Blunt had other thoughts. When the two characters said goodbye, Blunt laid one on Cruise. When asked about it, Blunt said, "t just felt right."
A New Girl Bromance
The comedy show New Girl is a lot of improvisation, so why wouldn't a kiss or two be included? The "Fredo" kiss between Schmidt and Nick, for example, wasn't exactly scripted. It happened during the first season episode "Injured."
During the episode, Schmidt aggressively kisses Nick on the mouth twice in a very Godfather Part II fashion. The two actors improvised their characters kissing a lot, but the showrunners rarely put them in the final cuts.
This Impromptu Kiss Wasn't Too Lost In Translation
Bill Murray stunned viewers when he laid one on Scarlett Johansson during the last scene of Lost in Translation. It was an emotional scene, but director Sofia Coppola gave Murray full rein on how he wanted it to end, telling him to improvise.
Not only is what his character Bob says in Charlotte's ear improvised, but so was the kiss! According to Coppola, all that was in the script was "He tries to make her laugh."
J-Law Knew What She Was Doing In American Hustle
Jennifer Lawrence might have been a bit younger than the rest of her castmates in American Hustle, but that didn't stop her from creating an epic, improvised scene. While in the bathroom with her husband's mistress Sydney (played by Amy Adams), Lawrence's character, Rosalyn, fiercely kisses her before evilly cackling.
The kiss was actually Adams's idea, while the evil laugh at the end was all Lawrence. As a result, the scene is actually quite memorable in a weird creepy way.
Michael Scott Making Things More Awkward In The Office
Fans of The Office know the character Michael Scott has a knack for making things worse and more awkward than they have to be, such as the strange kissing scene between him and Oscar.
During the episode "Gay Witch Hunt," actors Steve Carell and Oscar Nuñez were only supposed to hug. But it's Michael Scott, so Carell improvised and had his character do the most cringe-worthy half-kiss possible. Nuñez had no idea but had the perfect on-screen reaction.
Just A Small Kiss In Front Of 200 People In Jurassic World
The kiss between Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt in Jurassic World wasn't exactly scripted. The moment happens when they're standing in the park surrounded by screaming visitors (hey, perfect timing, guys!).
Originally, the smooch wasn't in the cards, but director Colin Trevorrow took Pratt aside and told him that they should try it out, not bringing Howard in on the spontaneous decision. The kiss was improvised, and her resulting reaction was real.
Valerie Leon Enjoyed The Unscripted Kiss In The Persuaders!
Actress Valerie Leon and actor Roger Moore worked together throughout the '70s. But not all of their projects resulted in an unscripted kiss. That little tidbit was saved for the comedy show The Persuaders!
In the scene, Moore just went for it, kissing his co-star smack dab on the lips. According to Leon, "Roger gave me an unscripted kiss. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed it. They kept it in."
This Legendary Kiss In All In The Family
If there is one kiss that had people talking back in 1972, it was the one that happened during season two, episode 21 of All in the Family. In the episode, Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr. shows up.
The episode is iconic for many reasons, but mostly because Davis Jr. goes in and kisses Carroll O'Connor's character Archie Bunker right on the cheek! Needless to say, it got people talking.
One Kiss Created "Stydia" On Teen Wolf
"Stydia," aka the couple name for Stiles and Lydia on Teen Wolf, never would have happened if not for a little improvised kiss on actor Dylan O'Brien's part. According to actress Holland Roden, O'Brien surprised her with the kiss while they were filming.
It was a sweet kiss on the cheek, but it was enough for the characters to start an on-screen relationship and for the entire Teen Wolf fandom to freak out in the best way possible.
The Kiss Fans Were Waiting For On The Good Wife
It took two long seasons, but the writers of The Good Wife finally gave fans what they waited for, an epic kiss between Julianna Margulies and Josh Charles. With undeniable chemistry, viewers of the TV series were losing hope, thinking that the romantic moment between the characters Alicia and Will would never come.
Finally, the writers and showrunners decided they had waited long enough and gave the fans what they wanted; they set the two characters up in an elevator for a passionate kiss.
Venus Van Dam Kissing Jax On Sons Of Anarchy
Sons of Anarchy fans were introduced to the lovely Venus Van Dam in season five of the biker series. What viewers weren't expecting to see was a kiss between Van Dam and the lead character Jax Teller.
Well, actor Charlie Hunnam wasn't exactly expecting it either! The season five episode five kiss between Hunnam and Walter Goggins was totally improvised, with the latter actor whispering "just trust me" in Hunnam's ear before going for it.
Andrew Garfield And Emma Stone In The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Running on to the stage during the graduation scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield didn't plan on kissing his co-star Emma. It kind of just happened. According to Garfield, "Oh, the kiss wasn't scripted. I didn't know I was going to do it."
"I just thought, 'I just missed my girlfriend's valedictorian speech. How am I going to make it up to her?'" Well, Peter Parker, the kiss is definitely a good start!
Anything Is Possible On Riverdale, Even An Impromtu Kiss
During the season four tribute to the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, actors Casey Cott and K.J. Apa went a bit off-script. During the episode, their characters Kevin and Archie lock lips.
In the script, Cott was supposed to go in and kiss Apa on the cheek. But when another take rolled around, Apa turned his head, and the two actors did a full-on lip-lock. According to both actors, that take is how the scene was meant to be.
The Tragic Kiss In Person of Interest
From the first season of Person of Interest, there was serious romantic tension between CIA operative John Reese and NYPD Detective Joss Carter. And that tension grew until the third season when the two finally kissed while hiding in a morgue.
Interestingly, while that kiss was a long time coming, it wasn't in the script. Actors Jim Caviezel and Taraji P. Henson took it upon themselves to insert that final moment with their characters before (spoiler!) Carter dies in Reese's arms. It's all very Shakespearean.
The Un-Scripted Kiss In Woo Almost Started A Fight
The 1998 romantic comedy Woo starred Tommy Davidson and Jada Pinkett Smith. At the end of the film, Davidson came up with the idea of their two characters dancing in the street.
Unfortunately, he had the bright idea of kissing Jada during one of those takes. She wound up flinching, and her husband, Will Smith, wasn't exactly amused. He ended up going to Davidson's trailer! Thankfully, Jada defused the situation before fists started flying.
The Kiss Between Jo And Arizona On Grey's Anatomy
The kiss between Jo and Alex and Jo and Arizona during the season 14 finale of Grey's Anatomy was perfect and, yet, it was unscripted. After learning she was asked to join a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Jo couldn't hold in her excitement.
She runs to her about-to-be-husband Alex, giving him a huge kiss, then turns around and kisses Arizona. In the scene, actress Jessica Capshaw looks very startled, as she had no clue her character was getting smooched, too!
The Edge Of Tongue
The unexpected kiss between Elle Macpherson and Anthony Hopkins didn't happen while filming The Edge but rather during the auditioning process. Doing a screen test with Hopkins, the casting directors wanted the two actors to kiss.
Being new to the acting world, Macpherson wasn't entirely sure what to do. She wasn't sure if it should be "with the tongue, without the tongue." So, she went with the side of her tongue! According to the model, Hopkins went very red after the kiss.
The Glee Kiss Everyone Was Waiting For
For those who have watched the series Glee, the crush Emma Pillsbury has on Will Schuester is no secret. She has it bad for the teacher. That's why the kiss between the two at the end of the first season was a long time coming.
However, the kiss wasn't originally in the cards. It was writer-director Brad Falchuk's idea. He pulled actor Matthew Morrison aside, told him to kiss Jayma Mays. Her reaction is completely authentic.
Danny Kissing Mindy In The Mindy Project
During a flight home, Danny leaves his seat, goes to the back of the plane, and gives Mindy a very loving kiss. Well, that passionate kiss wasn't scripted. It was a totally improvised move by actor Chris Messina.
According to The Mindy Project creator Mindy Kaling, the relationship between her character and Danny wasn't supposed to happen. But they had chemistry, the kiss happened, and the script was revamped to include their relationship. Kaling said during an interview that "You can't script chemistry."
The Beach Kiss In The Last Song
Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus were teenagers playing on the beach in The Last Song. While filming those fun scenes, the director, Julie Anne Robinson, was yelling at the two actors over the ocean, telling them to do this and that.
Eventually, Robinson told them to kiss. The moment wasn't in the script, but it wound up making it to the final cut. Who knows, maybe it was that impromptu kiss that began the actors' real-life romance.
Sam Thought A Kiss Would Be Better On Parenthood
In episode 11 of the sixth season of Parenthood, a certain kiss happened between Joel and Julia at an ice skating rink. In the script, the characters were only supposed to hold hands. Actor Sam Jaeger had another idea.
He thought the reconciliation between the two characters would be more powerful if they kissed. So, he went for it, kissing co-star Erika Christensen in an impromptu kiss that, in the end, made it to the final cut.
This Legendary Kiss In The Legends Of Tomorrow
Legends of Tomorrow characters Sara Lance and Ava tend to get into fights. Hey, it's a relationship; it happens. While battling an "alternative timeline Rasputin," they put their differences aside, and Sara dips her girlfriend and gives her an epic smooch.
If actress Jes Mccallan's reaction says anything, it's that she wasn't expecting the kiss. And that's because she wasn't. Her co-star, Caity Lotz, decided a spontaneous show of love was needed in the scene, so she went for it. The kiss made it to the final cut!
Impromptu Kissing Is The New Black
Piper and Alex have a love-hate relationship, which gets a bit complicated when they realize they're now in the same prison together in Orange Is the New Black. And while fans are used to the characters sharing intimate moments, one kiss was totally improvised.
When the two characters meet up in the prison chapel, the kiss they share wasn't scripted. According to actress Laura Prepon, there was just a lot of chemistry, and it felt right at the time.
Fox And Scully Kiss Surprised X-Files Fans In The Best Way
Fans of the X-Files waited, and waited, and waited some more for FBI agents Fox and Scully to finally have their romantic day in the sun. Unfortunately, it never came, regardless of how much chemistry and tensions rolled off the two.
That's why viewers were stunned to see the two characters locking lips in season seven. Granted, it was in an alternate universe, but still! The people had been waiting for seven seasons, and the writers finally gave them what they wanted!
