On the night of April 16, everyone seemingly tuned in to ABC to watch the Disney Family Singalong. The special featured actors returning as their fan-favorite characters for live performances of their classic songs. When the concert ended with a High School Musical reunion, one star was noticeably absent - Zac Efron.

Efron co-headlined the High School Musical franchise with Vanessa Hudgens. When it came time to perform "We're All In This Together" he was missing. Before the performance, Efron appeared in a pre-recorded video introduction, but that was all.

Fans of the movies noticed, and pressured Disney into explaining what happened. Ryan Seacrest, who hosted the evening, said Efron's wi-fi was patchy, and it would have ruined the otherwise seamless show. High School Musical director Kenny Ortega further defended the star:

"We couldn't reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course. Everyone we reached out to was quick — and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast."
