Deemed the “Umbrella Revolution”, these umbrella protests began on September 22, 2014 in Hong Kong, China after lawmakers set more restrictions on elections. Students started a public demonstration to advocate for full democratic elections and flooded the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As the protests started to gain momentum, citizens joined the students dressed in yellow. They occupied the streets and local banks and businesses were forced to close down as they marched. When police resorted to tear gas and pepper spray, the marchers used umbrellas to protect themselves. The movement lasted about three months, leaving an unprecedented amount of people inspired to fight for democracy in Hong Kong.
