What We’ll Be Reading: ‘The Summer Prince’

Hit a reading slump? We have just the cure! The Summer Prince, an artistic novel set in Brazil, has just hit bookshelves, and we at Buzznet can’t wait to get our hands on it! Alaya Dawn Johnson’s novel takes place in a futuristic Brazilian city called Palmares Três, 400 years after a nuclear war wiped out most of the Earth.

Here, women rule the city, but every five years, a man is elected to rule alongside the Queen as the Summer King. At the end of the year, he must choose the next Queen. Then he is killed.

The story centers around June Costa, a brilliant teen artist with big dreams that she’s never questioned – that is, until she meets Enki, a fellow artist and the new Summer King. The two stage dramatic, explosive art projects that fuel a growing rebellion in the city. And they fall in love deeply and unfortunately, because, like all Summer Kings before him, Enki must die.

The Summer Prince is available now from Scholastic. Try an excerpt here!
