Katy Perry Taking Legal Action Against Katie Perry (With Update)

Nary a month ago pop-performer Katy Perry proclaimed that although she fully enjoyed donning her rompers, she wasn’t going to launch a clothing label “just because she can.” But make no mistake, she plans to be the only Katy Perry with a spotlight.

The Katy Perry legal team is fighting forces against an Australian fashion designer Katie Perry. The Aussie Perry spoke to the press about the letter she received:

“On 9 June, I went to pick up some mail and received a 30-page letter from Fisher Adams Kelly, who represent Katheryn Hudson, (Katy Perry’s real name), opposing the use of my trademark and asking me to pull my trademark, stop using advertising and sign the attached letter or face legal proceedings.”

The next step is a hearing, and Katie is totally stressed out:

“I started my label before she was known here. I’ve worked hard building up my brand, everything is made in Australia, I’m building up a great reputation, and to have someone receive those statements from lawyers saying I can’t do that is distressing.”

According to an article on smartcompany.com, the tensions may be easing, though.

I tried to check out Katie Perry (the designer) through the Googs, to no avail. I did, however, find a 10-year-old trying to cash in on this fame:

Sure she likes cats, sure.

Jay kay. I hope they all learn to play nice.

UPDATE:

Official statement:In the course of securing trademark protection for Katy Perry in Australia, it came to the attention of her representatives that Katie Howell, a clothing designer in Australia, had filed an application for trademark protection under a similar name in connection with her own clothing design business. A routine notice letter was sent to Ms. Howell, as is customary in trademark practice, alerting her of Ms. Perry’s intended application.———————————————- This is a routine trademark application, and I certainly haven’t sued anyone. As usual, some of the press seems to have delighted in creating a story where there is none. K
