Bakersfield, California, may seem like a cultural wasteland to Interstate motorists whizzing past on the way to L.A., but the former West Coast country music mecca has become a revered place of origin in the cult of Nu metal. Call them innovators, call them progenitors, call them Korn, they are Bakersfield's proudest, loudest export. Featuring a lapsed mortuary sciences student as lead vocalist, Korn's self-titled debut album in 1994 put the world on notice that a new breed of metal was on the rise, and they've been elevating ever since.
