You know how a certain album fits perfectly with a certain time in your life, and if you'd discovered it a month earlier, you may not have embraced it in the same way? I think books can be like that, too. It wasn't the right time for either of those two. [cut=Read more...]
I did, however, finish Breathers, the zombie fic by S.G. Browne, and I definitely recommend it. Seeing as it is from the perspective of a Zombie, you'll find yourself agreeing with the most peculiar things. There are a couple of plot twists that keep you hooked, and I didn't expect it to end like it did, but it was quite satisfying. If you want to feel empathy for a member of the undead, pick this up.

Last night I finished Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy by Eric G. Wilson, and I have mixed feelings about it. First of all, as someone who has experienced depression, you kind of want to knock some sense into this guy. Perhaps with an anvil. Or a 2x4. The support for his argument comes largely from troubled artists who created great works during times of incredible pain. Well, you know, bravo and shit, but for every person that can create during a blue period, there's ten who can't function--who can't be there for their families, who can't do their job, who just can't get out of bed in the morning. On that end, I think he's blowing a lot of hot air.
HOWEVER. When he talks about balance--about the horror of being complacent and not feeling the kind of angst that inspires change--I get that. The whole principle of there being no moutains without the valleys and embracing the range of emotions as opposed to being a numb, neutral person. I'd say it's worth reading if you can tolerate chunks of flowery language AND you promise not to toss your meds and succumb to a life on your couch watching reality TV and justify it by calling it "performance art."
Pop Culture commenter Chuck Klosterman has a new book out! Eating The Dinosaur is a collection of essays not unlike Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs (my fave), Killing Yourself To Live, IV and Fargo Rock City (haven't read that one). Do I have to sell you on him at all?

For any of you who liked The Tipping Point, Blink or Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell put out What The Dog Saw and you can read the whole intro and part of the first chapter here. It got me hooked, that's for sure.

Lastly, I enter a lot of goodreads "first reads" giveaways. I entered for above book because the title reminded me of Paramore. Guess what? I won. I'm not a terribly religious person, but hey, I'm open-minded, so we'll see how this goes.

Heard of any new stuff lately? Which musicians that you know of read the most? Quit any books because they didn't feel right, lately?

I ended up buying Breathers by S.G. Browne (the zombie is the main character for a change) because he was an interesting speaker AND he sold the screen rights to Fox Searchlight. Diablo Cody is going to produce the movie version! Also picked up Pretty Dead by Francesca Lia Block, who is a YA author. Haven't started either one yet, but I'll let you know. [cut=Needz moar bookz...]
Nick Hornby (he wrote High Fidelity, Songbook, About A Boy... ringing a bell?) just wrote another very music-inspired novel called Juliet, Naked.
Goodreads has an interview with him where he talks about how the consumption of music has changed since he put out High Fidelity. You can read an excerpt here.A super awesome, super-relatable quick read that I highly recommend is Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway (recommended to me by the lovely Leslie Simon). Audrey breaks up with her musician boyfriend, he writes a song that unexpectedly skyrockets up the charts, thus making her famous. It's about her dealing with the sudden fame, trying to have a relationship despite it and how fandom just goes wacky sometimes. Bonus: soundtrack to the book-creation!
For those of you who follow Hayley Williams on Twitter, this is where you can get the book she posted a picture of (Music Listography)If you're super-stoked on the upcoming release of Where The Wild Things Are, you'd probably be interested in the novel Dave Eggers created out of those nine special sentences--check it out here.Lastly, Buzznet's fierce and funny blogger Newageamazon has her very first chapbook on Etsy. Pick it up to show your support of DIY artistry!
What are you guys reading?
ps. Add me on goodreads!

How was your Spring Vacation. Like he didn't know perfectly well. Jade's hands involuntarily curled into fists.
"Fine." He said tonelessly. He noticed his balled-up hands and slowly unclenched them, sliding his hands under his thighs. Davey watched Jade's hands and then stared at his thighs. Jade squirmed.
"Really? That's all?" Davey asked, "you didn't meet any girls or do anything fun?" he seemed almost disappointed.
"Nope." Jade replied. Unless your idea of fun is getting launched head-first into a bunch of mud, he thought, in which case I had a very fun-filled, phenomenal Spring Break. Thank you for asking.
"Too bad." Davey said, something like a hint of sympathy in his voice, "I wish we could've hung out together or something."
"Oh, but we did." Jade hissed through clenched teeth, noticing the eavesdropping kids all around him, "you and your friends saw me all spring."
The bus slowed to a stop-the last one, Jade knew-and the "friends" in question all filed on. They headed towards Davey right away, but when he frowned and shook his head, they chose different seats.
"I'm sorry about that. But you got in the way." Davey explained, knowing what was on Jade's mind. He sounded perfectly sincere. Maybe he was.
"Oh, yeah, I got in the way of you and your freaking drugged-up pals. Sorry about that." Jade commented sarcastically. It came out of nowhere. One moment Jade was defending his actions, the next, Davey's hand had wrenched Jade's head to the side.
"When are you going to learn?" Davey asked with sad brown eyes, "you don't mess with me."
Jade put a hand to his stinging cheek in shock. The bus-driver slammed on the breaks without warning, and Jade pitched forward onto his knees, spilling most of the contents of his half-unzipped backpack.
"Shit." He muttered, shifting the weight off of the knee that was digging onto the side of a pencil on the floor. He slowly began to gather his stuff.
"Sorry!" the bus-driver yelled over her shoulder to the dazed kids. Murmurs of "that's okay" and "whatever" replied to her. After all, it was a very rare custom to argue or upset the bus-driver. As Jade pulled some schoolbooks into his arms, he was fully aware of Davey's intense gaze on him. One of Davey's friends picked up a black notebook that had bumped into his shoes. Immediately recognizing what it was, Jade made a mad scramble for it; dropping everything he was holding. The guy raised it out of Jade's reach and opened it to a random page. A look of sheer glee came over his face.
"What's this?" he said, entirely too joyful, "does Jadey have a wittle cwush?" his eyes widened expressively. "perfect brown eyes-" His narrative was cut short by Smith, who grabbed the notebook and returned it to Jade. Jade hugged the book to his chest, scared senseless. He'd almost been found out. The whole school. His mother. Everyone would have known. Smith returned to his seat, and the guy who'd grabbed the notebook muttered something about "loser freshmen", meaning Smith. Davey was still staring at Jade, but now he looked kind of shaken. Oh, God. Davey. He was behind the guy with the notebook. He'd read it. He knew. Davey knew. Davey knew Jade's biggest secret, the one he'd only told Smith. Chills ran down Jade's spine. The things Davey could do with this type of knowledge! Jade didn't even want to think about it. But suddenly, irrationally, Jade felt safe under Davey's watchful eyes. He quickly gathered his stuff and scrunched it into his backpack, zipping it up before it could all fall out again. He shifted in his seat. Davey's leg was pressing against Jade's Jade looked up and thought that for one second, he saw something in Davey's eyes. Something like understanding.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully, until, at 11:30pm,, Jade was IM'd by Davey.

*~ Just like that.

CHAT LOG:

As Thomas Carter's new photobook CHINA: Portrait of a People makes its debut as the most comprehensive book of photography on modern China ever published by a single author, literati and the press are unable to hold back their acclaim. Following are excerpts from the praise CHINA: Portrait of a People continues to receive from readers and media reviewers:
"The collection of 800 photos paints a beautiful, comprehensive portrait of China and its people in a way that words never could." - the Beijinger (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"China: Portrait of a People is a snapshot of an entire country in a time of great change; a truthful and touching portrayal of the Chinese people in all their variety, charm and earthiness. As such, even if it does not turn out a best-seller, it will have lasting value as a social document. This isn't a coffee table book of the Great Wall or the quintessentially Chinese landscapes of Guilin. It isn't a travel book either, although it may well inspire many to come see China for themselves." - China.Org (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"Instead of similar photo books, China: Portrait of a People (published by Blacksmith Books, 635 pages, 280 yuan) is a more portable volume. Rather than focus on geographic, landscape or sight-seeing photos, Carter focuses on the distinct features and lifestyles that define the nation’s 56 ethnic groups collected in 33 provinces." - Beijing Today (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"CHINA: Portrait of a People is not to be dismissed as another light-hearted snapshot collection. But neither is it heavy socio-political commentary. Photojournalist-cum-travel writer Tom Carter has successfully struck a fine balance between the two, dividing the 600-plus pages of annotated photography into 33 chapters, a document of the two years he spent travelling in different Chinese provinces." - HK Magazine (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"Tom Carter gets around. Thirty three provinces, 56 ethnic cultures, 10,000 portraits. The 35-year-old American spent two years on the road photographing people from every nook and cranny in China for his ambitious 640-page coffee-table book, CHINA: Portrait of a People. His stated mission: To dispel the stereotype of the Chinese as a homogeneous single nationality." - Urbanatomy Shanghai (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"For those who read more in a twinkling eye or a lined brow than in a slate roof, (CHINA: Portrait of a People) is a revelation, providing a more honest picture of this turbulent land than a rack of China travel books pre-approved by the Ministry of Information." - China Expat (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"Tom gives us an incredible insight to the people of China, from poor to wealthy, young to old. You can see he gets into their culture and delivers a fabulous insider view, capturing emotions through the lens. Each region has a selection of Tom's photos with brief, but informative captions. It's not a travel guide or a photography technique guide but it will keep you enthralled for hours at a time." - ePhotozine (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"Travel photos taken by a stranger seldom fascinate. But 800 color images captured by Tom Carter as he spent two years on the road, traveling 56,000 kilometers through all of China's 33 provinces, make a dramatic exception... Carter's weighty book takes an effort to carry home from a store. But anyone interested in China should love owning it." - Cairns Media Magazine (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"The images veer between the light-hearted (laughing children playing on a sand dune in Gansu), titillating (a pair of female KTV hostesses in Shandong lean in for a kiss), appalling (a mentally ill girl lies in the middle of the road as cars just pass her by), and thought provoking (the worn and sunburned face of a destitute old Tibetan lady). But there is a constant - the peering visages of all ethnicities, of all China. Through Carter's journey of self-discovery, we end up discovering a little more about ourselves - and a land so vast, so disparate, that 638 pages of photos barely manage to scratch the surface. Still, Portrait of a People is a very good place to start peeling back the layers." - Time Out (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"'Tom Carter is an extraordinary photographer whose powerful work captures the heart and soul of the Chinese people." - Anchee Min, author of Red Azalea and Empress Orchid (read the entire China Portrait review here)
"Tom Carter's photo book is an honest and objective record of the Chinese and our way of life- his camera leads us through 33 wide-sweeping scenes of the real and the surreal." - Mian Mian, author of Candy (read the entire China Portrait review here)"It takes a great boldness of spirit to set out to capture the essence of so diverse a people as the Chinese in a single volume of photography. The thrill is to discover that Tom Carter has achieved just that." - Asia Literary Review (read the entire China Portrait review here)"As photojournalist Tom Carter discovered on his journey across China, to know the true spirit and culture of a place, you must look into the faces of its people." - MiNDFOOD magazine (read the entire China Portrait review here)
Doing business in China is all about getting to know the Chinese people and their culture. Precisely what this stunning book by Tom Carter has to offer. Eye opener!" - China Success Stories (read the entire China Portrait review here)"Tom Carter is a guerrilla hit-and-run photojournalist with a camera instead of a grenade launcher. To take the up-close and personal pictures in Portrait of a People, Carter risked jail; almost froze on the way to Tibet; faced exhaustion and hunger; was beaten by drunks; plagued by viral infections; and risked being shot by North Korean border guards. The hundreds of photos in Portrait are priceless. I doubt if there will ever be another book about China like this one." - Lloyd Lofthouse, author of My Splendid Concubine (read the entire China Portrait review here)
