Helpful or Harmful: The New Procedure to Turn Brown Eyes Blue?

Of all the things people can spend time inventing, Doug Daniels and Gregg Homer, Stroma Medical CEO and Stanford law professor, have developed a 20 second “beauty” procedure to turn brown eyes blue. The procedure, Lumineyes, is irreversible and uses a laser to remove brown pigment in eyes, resulting in a blue shade. The reasoning behind this invention? Daniels and Homer believe people simply like light-colored eyes better. “People like the depth of a light eye. Eyes are like the windows to the soul, and a light eye is like an open window.” Lumineyes is still in its experimental phase and will probably be available in the U.S. in 3 years. It will cost around $5,000.

So far, I can’t think of any ways in which this invention could do good. It simply perpetuates the idea that beauty equals classic European looks: blonde hair and blue eyes. Also, is anyone truly insecure about his or her eye color?
