Buzznet Designer to Watch: Rio Warner of Beauty Is Pain Couture

Buzznet is basically a breeding ground for the next Karl Lagerfelds and Vivienne Westwoods of the world. We have SO many talented fashion designers doing creative and amazing things, and this week we want to highlight some of them and their work through interviews and photos. Here are our Buzznet Designers to Watch…

In this edition we have Rio Warner of Beauty Is Pain Couture, a stylist and designer know for her unique, hand-crafted pieces that have been worn by the likes of Audrey Kitching and have won various awards and accolades from the Los Angeles fashion community.

Buzznet: Describe your own personal style in 10 words or less.

Rio Waner: Colorful, glam, glitter, rock and roll over the top!!

BN: What are some of your fashion must haves? What is something you can’t live without?

RW: A really perfect fitted leather jacket, every truely fashionable person needs to splurge on a good one, they’re timeless, a pair of fingerless gloves, and lots and lots and lot of hats!!! I love a good hat! And of course…nothing makes an outfit look better than confidence!

BN: Who are your favorite fashion icons?

RW: David Bowie, Karl Laugerfeld, Michael Schmidt, Heatherette, the Blonds, Leigh Bowery, Vivienne Westwood, Rainbow Brite, and of course the Harajuku style.

BN: Describe your clothing line in 10 words or less.

RW: Fun, edgy, punky, colorful, glam, girlie, unique, annnnnnnd Rock n’ Roll baby!

BN: Where do you find your inspiration?

RW: I find my greatest inspiration from the materials I have available to me. I buy tons of chains, fabric, patches, lace, glitter, studs, rhinestones, zippers, pearls, whatever I can get my hands on, and I work from there. I guess its kind of a backwards approach, most designers decide what they want to make and then go buy the materials! Nope…not me!

BN: tell us about your all-time favorite piece you have created and why it’s your absolute favorite.

RW: My all time favorite piece I have ever made, was a floor length variegated rainbow gown I made out of tiny scraps of fabric that otherwise would have been thrown away. I hand overlocked thousands of pieces of fabric, leaving them looking like beautiful leaves or feathers. I actually won an award from the Textile Association of Los Angeles for that one!

BN: What are your plans for the future? Upcoming projects? Collaborations?

RW: I have a ton of stuff coming up in the future! I’m collaborating with a friend on a jewelry line called Parotlet, working with a seamstress on samples for a full line coming soon, tons and TONS of really fun photoshoots coming up, a few really great magazine spreads that are being printed soon, doing wardrobe for an A.F.I. short film, working on an online store, and hopefully opening a venue for live performances, art shows, and fashion in the near future!

BN: Where can we find (and buy!) your work?

RW: You can find my designs available at my store:
