While 2018's Avengers: Infinity War racked up much more than one superhero death, 2019's body count is just as impressively sad. Comic book fans across the world said goodbye to the likes of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, while DC fans said farewell to more than one Arrow-verse hero during the cross-over episodes.

All Raven Wanted Was To Talk To Jean Grey
While in the comic books Raven, aka Mystique, is considered to be "one of the bad guys," ever since Days of Futures Past, she's turned over a new leaf and is one of the X-Men. Unfortunately for the shapeshifter, her allegiance to Professor X costs her dearly in the 2019 film Dark Phoenix.
While trying to talk to an emotionally distressed and way-to-powerful-for-her-own-good Jean Grey, Raven is flung across the yard by Grey's telepathy. She is then impaled by wreckage from Jean's outburst, dying within seconds.
"I Am Iron Man"
We're still not over the loss of Iron Man in 2019. And while the death of Tony Stark isn't the end of the MCU, it is the end of an era for the franchise. The death of one of the original Avengers was the last thing anyone was prepared for when walking into Endgame.
But when Stark raised his hand, and all of the stones were on his make-shift gauntlet, people knew they were about to say goodbye to one of their favorite heroes. R.I.P Iron Man; you'll be missed.
Gypsy's Ex-Boyfriend's Doppelganger Won Their Fight
In the sixth season of the CW's hit series The Flash, viewers watch as Gypsy is taken out by her ex-boyfriend's doppelganger, Echo. Of course, no one knows this at the time, but he's eventually outed!
As a collector, Gypsy is allowed to go between the Earths without punishment. It's her job to collect those breaking the law. So, when she finally comes into contact with her long-time foe Echo, the two fight. Echo eventually vaporizes and kills Gypsy.
David Dunn Had His Greatest Weakness Used Against Him
In 2019, the Unbreakable trilogy fans lost a hero in David Dunn, The Overseer. Played by Bruce Willis, Dunn is a vigilant overseer with super-human strength and an unbreakable body. But even those traits weren't able to help him in the final installment of the trilogy, Glass.
In the film, Dunn's weakness of water is exposed, leaving him vulnerable when the Beast decides to take their fight underwater. Ultimately, the Beast isn't the one who kills Dunn. Rather, it's a police officer who drowns the hero.
Black Widow Sacrificed Herself In Avengers: Endgame
If you haven't seen the international phenomena Avengers: Endgame, then we're not sorry for this spoiler because you should have seen the movie already. Black Widow is the first hero to sacrifice themselves in the film, tossing herself over the cliff on Vorimir to get the Soul Stone.
As one of the six stones the Avengers needed to reverse the effects of Thanos' snap, Nat did one of the most selfless acts, allowing her friend to live to see his family again. Pretty much, she's the best friend ever.
Reed Strucker Used His Destructive Powers To End His Foe
In 2019, the world lost another one of the Mutant Underground's heroes, Reed Strucker. As one of the first regulars on the show The Gifted, fans were surprised when he sacrificed himself to kill one of the Inner Circle, Reeva, whose main goal was to start a war.
As someone who denigrates everything they touch, Strucker used his otherwise destructive powers to his advantage. He destroys the top floors of the Inner Circle's building, taking down Reeva and himself with the foundation.
Oliver Queen Took One For The Team Of Earth-38
Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, wasted no time sacrificing himself in 2019, during "Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part I." After fighting off the Anti-Monitor's forces on Earth-38, Queen ends up saving billions of people, successfully evacuating them to Earth-1.
Due to his heroics, Queen dies shortly after the evacuation. On another Earth realm, there is a life-restoring Lazarus Pit. Since the squad wants to resurrect Queen, Tom Ellis' Lucifer joins the picture for a short while, and a whole bunch of other stuff you'll have to watch to understand.
Nora West-Allen Is Erased From The Future
It seems as though in 2019, comic book properties had an affinity for erasing characters from existence. The newest member of the "I no longer live in the future" crew is Nora West-Allen, aka XS. In the CW's hit series The Flash, XS is forced to say goodbye to her parents as her future is taken away, leaving her non-existent.
Ironically, it's because Team Flash defeats the villain Cicada that West-Allen begins to feel the effects of her altered timeline. We call that cruel irony.
Selene Gallio's Is Tossed From A Moving Train
In 2019, Dark Phoenix saw more than one hero pass from one life to the other. Even though she started off on Team Magneto, Selene Gallio, aka The Black Queen, turned the tables on her allegiance when aliens came into the picture.
While in a government train with both Professor X and Magneto affiliated individuals, The Black Queen and the other mutants engage in a battle with the D'Bari. Unfortunately, The Black Queen is tossed from the moving train with a lot of force and is never seen again.
Doctor Manhattan Loses To Lady Trieu
While the death of Doctor Manhattan didn't necessarily go as Lady Trieu planned, the godlike superhero does die in the season one finale of HBO's Watchmen. After a white supremacist group known as the Kavalry figure out where Doctor Manhattan has been hiding, they set a trap.
Only, the trap is really laid by Lady Trieu, a mutant who wants nothing more than to take Doctor Manhattan's power. She succeeds in killing the mutant, but one of Doctor Manhattan's allies kills Lady Trieu before his powers are transferred.
Translucent Was So Close To Being Set Free
Amazon Prime's hit series The Boys lost a hero, in 2019. Played by Alex Hassell, Translucent was the first superhero casualty in the series, but it wasn't the last. After being captured by The Boys, Translucent finds himself bound, and in the presence of Hughie, Billy Butcher, and Frenchie, all of whom want to destroy the "supe."
Since Translucent has indestructible carbon meta-material skin, the trio decides the best plan of action is to put a bomb inside of his body. Hughie detonates the bomb, and Translucent is gone.
Popclaw Is Taken Out In An Unjust Manner
For The Boys minor character Popclaw, 2019 was her final year. To get out of paying rent, the hero accidentally crushes her landlord's skull, something she didn't know was taped. The Boys use the video as blackmail, and Popclaw is forced to give them information.
Of course, nothing ever good comes out of blackmail. So when A-Train finds out Popclaw has been helping The Boys, he uses his super-speed to grab two syringes, injecting her with something, and resulting in both characters' deaths.
Aqualad Dies For Love
In the 2019 show Titans, the world lost Garth, aka Aqualad, during an airport shooting. Garth finally woos Donna Troy, his long-time crush and colleague. But, unknown to Garth, she is about to leave The Titans for Themyscira.
Once Garth finds out Donna's plan, he rushes to the airport, planning to confess his undying love for her. That doesn't go as planned, and he winds up jumping in front of one of Deathstroke's bullets, taking it to the chest and saving Donna.
Sage's Death In The Gifted Was A Misunderstanding
During the 13th episode of the second season of The Gifted, super-intelligent mutant Sage is killed over a misunderstanding. As one of the individuals of the group the Mutant Underground, Sage was tasked with computer analysis.
So, when Polaris hacks into the data files to gain access to privileged information, people assume Sage betrayed them, especially Reeva and the Frost sisters. As a result, Reeva uses her sonic powers to kill Sage, even though she was pleading her innocence.
Kid Loki's End Was A Bit Confusing
Poor Kid Loki didn't even die in Asgardians Of The Galaxy #7; he just vanishes from existence -- it's all a bit confusing. After the death of the original Loki, Kid Loki came to be and kicked around the Marvel Universe for a while.
Then, Angela finds him hanging out in a tree during the seventh issue. All Kid Loki says to her before disappearing is that he won't be able to be on the team anymore. Then, he vanishes.
The Heroes of Earth-2...Minus Black Canary
The CW's "Crisis On Infinite Earths" event brought with it wave after wave of superhero deaths and planet destruction. During the premiere episode, viewers watch as Earth-2 is completely annihilated.
With it, a majority of the superheroes living in that reality. The episode ends with a giant wave taking out the planet, including its inhabitants and heroes. Everyone dies while Laurel Lance, Earth-2's Black Canary, jumps through a portal with Diggle and Oliver Queen moments before the planet is destroyed.
Star Boy Saves The World By Dooming Himself
In The Justice League Vs. The Fatal Five, 31st-century hero Thomas Kallor, aka Star Boy, travels to the past and allies himself with the Justice League, a team of superheroes looking to eliminate the evil Fatal Five. Unfortunately, his time in the 21st century turns fatal, as he sacrifices himself to save the world.
After the Fatal Five detonates a Green Lantern-powered bomb in the Earth's sun, Star Boy figures the only way to save Earth is to use his mass-controlling powers to stop the bomb's expansion. It ends in his death.
Donna Troy Proves What Type Of Hero She Is
Donna Troy, aka Wonder Girl, proved just what type of hero she is in a 2019 episode of Titans, sacrificing her life to save innocent civilians as well as one of her teammates. While fighting Superboy, a metal tower groans under the distress it received from a super battle.
The tower falls towards Dove and civilians. So, obviously, Donna runs towards them, holding the tower up with her super-strength as everyone flees to safety. Unfortunately, the tower is coursing with electricity, eventually killing Donna.
Ruth Aldine Thought Death Was Better Than Seeing The Future
X-Men said goodbye to Ruth Aldine, aka Blindfold, in Uncanny X-Men #11. Now, Ruth was born without eyes, giving her multiple mental abilities, including the power to see into the future, something she didn't necessarily enjoy.
Sadly, fans of the comics weren't all that surprised to read her character had decided to end her own life. The issue dives into Blindfold's point of view and her last thoughts, of which she writes on the wall, "My gift is seeing the future. My curse is knowing I no longer have one."
Valkyrie Is Stabbed In the Back, Literally
War Of The Realms #2 was a hard time for the Asgardians, particularly Valkyrie, who didn't make it out of the fight with her life. While fighting off a horde of Dark Elves and trolls, the legendary fighter calls out for Malekith, the reason behind the entire battle.
Instead of coming before Valkyrie and fighting her like a brave warrior, he pops up behind her, thrusting his sword into her back. We call that cowardice, and she deserved so much better.
Mesmer Just Wanted To See His Daughter
Billy Butcher isn't a nice guy, so when he realizes one of the lower-class supes betrays him, all bets are off. Mesmer didn't have a chance of making it to the next season of The Boys after he shows off the information he has on the CIA Black Ops Team.
So, instead of seeing his daughter again like he was promised, Mesmer is murdered. The tiny supe ends up getting beat to death by Butcher, but not before the sadistic character has Mesmer read his mind, so he knows exactly what's about to happen.
Red Daughter Learned The True Meaning Of Loyalty
Season four of Supergirl saw lead actress Melissa Benoist playing three different, and yet the same, characters - Supergirl, her clone Red Daughter, and Kara Danvers. Although Red Daughter starts off as a pawn of Lex Luthers, she soon realizes what true loyalty is, switching sides and becoming one of the good guys.
Of course, her good streak doesn't last long, and she is killed while protecting Supergirl from Lex Luther's Kryptonite energy blast. One good thing that comes out of this fiasco is Supergirl absorbs Red Daughter's energy, becoming stronger and defeating Luther.
Blink Was Taken Out Saving Her Friends
While the Purifiers were on their war-path to eliminate Morlocks from the world, Blink was caught in the crossfire. In 2019, during The Gifted episode "calaMity," viewers watch as Blink uses her ability to materialize portals, helping her Morlock and Underground friends to escape the sewers before the Purifiers can capture them.
Unfortunately for Blink, after the last person gets through the portal, disgraced Agent Jace Turner shoots her three times, killing Blink. Let's just say this isn't the first time Agent Turner screwed up.
Old Man Logan Finally Met His End
For X-Men fans, saying the death of Logan, aka Wolverine, was a surprise would be a lie. The old mutant was dying of Adamantium poisoning, so when he finally met his end in Dead Man Logan #12, it was sad but expected.
In one final battle against Sabertooth and Mister Sinister, Wolverine, alongside Dani Cage and Bruce, Wolverine finally defeats his longtime foe. But he doesn't walk away unscathed. His healing powers were completely shot, and his two friends brought him to his family's graves to die.
Starman Wasn't Fast Enough
In 2019, the Justice League lost one of their most important allies against their fight against Perpetua and Lex Luther, Starman. In Justice League #34, the present-day Starman teams up with the Justice League, hoping to open portals and bring in more heroes of the multi-verse to stop Luther and Perpetua.
Unfortunately, Starman is unable to open the portal in time. And as Perpetua's powers rise, she punches the life out of Starman, instantly killing the hero.
Gibbon Chose The Wrong Side And Paid For It With His Life
Unfortunately for Gibbon, he started off wanting to be a good guy but ended up going down the wrong path when Spider-Man rejected his help. But his end didn't come at the hands of Spidey but rather during "The Hunted" event set up by Kraven The Hunter in Amazing Spider-Man #18.
Kraven gathered together all of the supers that had "animal-like tendencies," including Spidey, Gibbon, Vulture, and more, in a fight against a drone army. Long story short, Vulture uses Gibbon as a human shield against an onslaught of bullets.
Heimdall Has a Warriors Death
While fans of the MCU witnessed Heimdall's death on-screen, comic book fans had to relive his end a few months later, but at the hands of a different foe. In the comic Valkyrie: Jane Foster #2, Jane Foster takes up the role of Valkyrie, but her legendary sword Dragonfang is missing.
None other than Bullseye finds the sword, running it through Heimdall. But the gatekeeper is relentless, getting up to help Jane fight off Bullseye before finally falling.
Professor X...Again
Since making his way to the comic book world in the 60s, Professor X has died many, many times. But dying isn't this mutants cup of tea, and he's come back from the dead just as many times. His latest and (maybe) final death came during X-Force #1.
At the end of the issue, readers see Professor X's helmet on the ground with a bullet hole right between where his eyes would be. But this is X-Men; the professor might show up again.
Khalil Payne Has A Harsh End
Fans of the CW series Black Lightning said goodbye to Khalil Payne, aka Painkiller, in 2019. After suffering from a spinal injury that leaves him paralyzed, Payne accepts an offer from Tobias Whale that will help him walk again -- a spinal implant and some superpowers on top of it, making him Painkiller.
But when Payne refuses to carry out a hit for Tobias, the latter decides to teach his personal assassin a lesson. Tobias rips Payne's new spine out, leaving him to die.
Cosmonut Meets His End By A Typically Non-Super Person
In a very Suicide Squad-like manner, the team of villains never memorialized Cosmonut's sacrifice, nor do they even remember him being at the fight that ultimately killed him. As part of Russia's Annihilation Brigade, it was Cosmonut's job to take down the Squad, but in a weird turn of events, he winds up saving them.
When Amanda Waller, a typically non-super person, ends up the size of Godzilla and can breathe fire, Cosmonut decides to play the hero. He saves Harley Quinn and Rick Flagg, dying in the process.
