Major Casting Changes For The Fall 2019 TV Season
One of the most crucial parts of creating a television show is making sure that the casting is absolutely perfect. It's hard to imagine another person in the place of your favorite TV character, but sometimes that's show business. Also, it's important to both add and get rid of other characters to keep things moving and prevent the story from getting stale.
This upcoming fall 2019 TV season will be full of huge casting changes that have the possibility of making fans happy, upset, or confused. Check below if your favorite show will be experiencing a shake-up in casting.
Juan Riedinger Will Join the Riverdale Family
When Riverdale premiered in 2016 it caused a frenzy among its teen audience. The show is based on the Archie comic books and follows the familiar characters of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica during their tumultuous high school years. It is set to enter its fourth season on Wednesday, October 9 and will be adding some new faces to the cast.
One particular member joining the upcoming season is Juan Riedinger as Archie's nemesis, Dodger. Riedinger already has 100 acting credits under his belt including roles on Narcos, Claws, and Good Behavior.
Haneefah Wood Lucked Out After a Sudden Casting Change on Schooled
Fans were curious to see how The Goldbergs spin-off, Schooled, would turn out. It's now in its second season and is bringing in new characters. The show is similar in format to its predecessor, but instead, it takes place in 1990-something.
Originally, Kali Hawk was set to play the new high school biology teacher, Wilma Howell, but after the second season aired it was clear that there was a casting change to Haneefah Wood. Wood is best known for parts on Nurse Jackie, Baskets, and Grease Live!.
Matt Hobby Earned a Major Milestone on Young Sheldon
There are many instances where a guest or recurring cast member earns their spot as a series regular, such as Steve Urkel on Family Matters or Kimmy Gibbler on Full House. Now, Pastor Jeff (Matt Hobby) on Young Sheldon can be added to that list.
Following the immense success of The Big Bang Theory, the creator made a spin-off called Young Sheldon. It centers around a young version of Sheldon Cooper growing up in Texas. His mother often works with the comedic and wise Pastor Jeff. Before Hobby joined the cast he had parts in Boardwalk Empire, Hart of Dixie, and The Grinder.
Lori Loughlin Can Kiss Aunt Becky Goodbye
Not all actors get the privilege of remaining on their shows during its entire run. This can happen for numerous reasons, such as contracts ending or an actor working on another project. Lori Loughlin's reason was a bit different.
Earlier this year Loughlin, her husband, and other members of the Hollywood elite were caught up within the college admissions scandal. Loughlin specifically was shown paying a large sum of money for both of her daughters to be admitted into the University of Southern California (USC). Soon after it was revealed that she wouldn't be returning as Aunt Becky in the final season of Fuller House.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Team Is Excited To Add Cary Elwes
Cary Elwes has made a huge comeback to acting in 2019. First, he was a new cast member on the third season of Netflix's number one show, Stranger Things, and now he's set to join another fan-favorite series. It hasn't been announced who he will play, but Elwes has joined the third season of Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
For those who may not remember Elwes from his previous roles, he was most famously Westley in The Princess Bride, Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Dr. Lawrence Gordon in Saw.
Sam Witwer Will Play a New Teacher on Riverdale
Fans of Riverdale may notice that there are constantly characters coming and going, but even actors with minor roles can make an impact with viewers. With the fourth season set to premiere on October 9, it was announced that Jughead will be attending a prep school.
At the school, he meets his new creative writing teacher named Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer) who is described as "handsome, bookish, and cool." People may recognize Witwer for his roles in some Star Wars shows, Supergirl, and Being Human.
Lachlan Watson Gets Promoted on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The creators of Riverdale took another character from the Archie comic series and gave them a similar dark twist. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is another dramatic and horror series with a mainly teen audience.
After the first couple of seasons, it was reported that Lachlan Watson will be promoted to a series regular role as Susie/Theo Putnam for seasons three and four. Watson hasn't been in acting for too long but has starred in titles such as The Ultimate Life, Nashville, and Surreal Estate.
Kaliko Kauahi is Now a Series Regular on Superstore
NBC is one of the best places to catch some of today's most hilarious sitcoms. Now that Superstore has entered its fifth season fans are quite aware of the character dynamics. Kaliko Kauahi's character of Sandra ended up being a favorite among viewers, so she was promoted to a series regular for the new season.
Sandra is a bit of a doormat because she lets others dictate her life, but it was nice to see her finally end up with her true love, Jerry. Kauahi's dynamic performance of Sandra is great to watch and those who want to see her in other projects should check out Raven's Home, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Liza Weil Has Some Great Connections in Hollywood
Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino have created some well-received projects together with their most recent being The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. They also were the minds behind Gilmore Girls and that's where they got the idea to bring back actors they've worked with in the past.
Liza Weil acted in 127 episodes of Gilmore Girls as Paris Geller and went on to appear in projects such as Scandal, Bunheads, and How to Get Away with Murder. Now, she will rejoin Amy and Dan on the third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in an undisclosed role.
Eric McCormack Will Be a New Cast Member on Atypical
It's now expected for both sitcom and movie stars to join the streaming world. Eric McCormack, best known for his titular role on Will & Grace, will be joining the Netflix cast of Atypical. McCormack will reportedly play Sam's outlandish art professor during his first year of college.
It was also announced that the new Will & Grace reboot will be ending after the upcoming season airs. Aside from Atypical, McCormack is also set to star in an upcoming adventure film called Queen Bee.
Ashleigh Murray Ditches Riverdale for a New Show
There seems to be a pattern with a popular TV series getting a spin-off. With all of Riverdale's success, the creators decided to craft a new show set around one of Riverdale's musical characters. Ashleigh Murray will be leaving Riverdale to star as her familiar character Josie on Katy Keene.
Katy Keene will show Josie moving to New York to pursue her music career, reconnect with her father, and start a new romantic relationship. Something Riverdale fans may not know about Murray is that she is one of the older members of the cast and was playing a high school student in her early-30s.
Sara Gilbert's New Role on Atypical
Netflix's Atypical is set to release its third season on November 1, which will focus on Sam navigating his first year away from home at college. That journey wouldn't be complete without memorable professors. Sara Gilbert is set to join the cast as Professor Judd, an ethics scholar who tends to disagree with her students.
Gilbert has been acting since the young age of nine and is mostly known for her part on Roseanne and its spin-offs. Also, she has been one of the co-hosts on The Talk for the last decade.
Gavin Leatherwood Becomes the Newest Teenage Heartthrob
It's common for show creators to check in on how characters are received by fans through social media. After the first couple of seasons of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, many teen fans were rooting for Sabrina to end up with either Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) or Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood).
Lynch was already a series regular, but to up the stakes, Leatherwood was soon promoted to series regular for the next two seasons. Although he's only acted for a couple of years he's already had roles in NCIS, Grown-ish, and Wicked Enigma.
Sterling K. Brown Will be Part of a Marvelous TV Show
Sterling K. Brown is now one of Hollywood's top A-list stars after being cast in NBC's This Is Us and Marvel's Black Panther. His acting has earned him many prestigious awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes, Emmys, Critics Choice, and more. Now, he's got a new project up his sleeve.
Brown recently announced that he will be joining the season three cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino wrote a part for him. Also, make sure to catch him in Disney's upcoming Frozen II.
Danai Gurira Won't Be Returning to The Walking Dead
After 10 years on the air, The Walking Dead will be making a few changes to the upcoming season. At the 2019 San Diego Comic Convention Danai Gurira, known for her role of Michonne, announced that she will be leaving the show due to personal reasons.
Gurira has also appeared in several Marvel films as Okoye and will be featured in the new Godzilla vs. Kong and Star Trek Sequel films. Many fans were heartbroken that she was leaving the show, but playing the same role for 10 seasons is sometimes a lot to ask from an actor.
Jussie Smollett May Have Ruined His Career
After it was reported that Jussie Smollett allegedly staged a hate crime against himself it caused an uproar throughout the world. Some thought he did it for attention, while others thought there might be something more serious behind his reasoning.
In either case, the situation caused him an immense amount of bad press. Both Smollett and 20th Century Fox TV negotiated an extension to him returning to season six of Empire, but as of yet his character Jamal isn't set to appear in any episodes.
Olivia Colman is Part of Acting Royalty
Coming straight off an Academy Award win Olivia Colman has earned a new prestigious television role. Colman is set to star as the new Queen Elizabeth II on the third season of Netflix's The Crown after taking over for Claire Foy. Since she's playing a real person Colman had to do extensive research to make sure she matched every physicality.
She has quite the acting range after appearing in almost 100 professional roles. Colman is probably most well-known for her Oscar-winning role as Queen Anne in The Favourite, but she's also starred in projects such as Fleabag, The Lobster, and Broadchurch.
Keep an Eye Out for Elsie Fisher
Elsie Fisher is preparing to step into the world of horror. The young actress will be making her official television debut in a supporting role on Hulu's Castle Rock. Fisher will play Joy; Annie Wilkes' daughter who becomes terrified of her mother's disturbing behavior and seeks out help.
Younger viewers may remember Fisher from her childhood role of Agnes in the Despicable Me franchise. Other cinephiles would most likely recognize her for her breakout performance in last year's Eighth Grade, which was written and directed by comedian Bo Burnham.
Helena Bonham Carter Met Princess Margaret Before Playing Her on TV
After The Crown hired Olivia Colman to play Queen Elizabeth II they needed to cast her sister, Princess Margaret. They settled on famous British actress Helena Bonham Carter. She noted that her uncle was actually good friends with Princess Margaret. When Bonham Carter met the princess in real life she said she critiqued her on her acting skills.
Those who want to see her in other projects before tuning in to the third season of The Crown should check out her roles in multiple Tim Burton films such as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice in Wonderland.
Andrew Scott Sticks to British Television
It's almost impossible not to see Andrew Scott on some of today's popular British TV shows. So far he's mainly known for playing Moriarty on Sherlock and becoming the fan-favorite as "Hot Priest" on Fleabag. Now, he will be returning to British TV to play Colonel John Parry on HBO's His Dark Materials.
Colonel John Parry is Will's father and also became a shaman after accidentally traveling to Lyra's fantasy world. Broadway fans may also watch the series because one of Scott's cast members is Lin-Manuel Miranda.
