A Timeline Of Tana Mongeau And Jake Paul’s Relationship Because We Still Can’t Believe It Either
If you’ve been even remotely on the internet the past few months you know that YouTube’s problem children and Shane Dawson School Of Hard Knocks graduates Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul got married. They squeezed the ceremony in on July 28th after just two months of dating.
It wasn’t your typical ceremony. An MTV camera crew was there, a fistfight broke out, and an Oprah impersonator was seen sipping champagne with the rest of the social media influencers. Oh, and there wasn’t any paperwork involved to actually legally marry them. Scrap sipping tea, this relationship merits a healthy chugging.
It Began With A Beiber
A Justin Bieber lookalike to be exact. Brad Sousa, a Canadian like Bieber, was dating Mongeau up until the end of April when things took a turn. The two had been dating for a few months until cheating rumors began to swirl around Sousa.
It all blew up in his face at Coachella (they’re influencers, of course it was at Coachella) when Tana caught wind of his infidelity. Though he swears he never “touched a girl” while they were dating, Sousa did admit he was suggestively texting other women from back home. The pair called it quits.
Meanwhile, Jake Was Causing Trouble Online
Jake Paul, brother to Logan Paul, is one of the internet’s favorite punching bag. Videos surfaced in 2018 of him burning a couch in his pool, drag racing down residential streets, and a slew of bullying accusations were brought forward by his roommates and former “Team 10” members.
YouTuber Shane Dawson made a staggering eight-part series about Paul calling into question whether he was a sociopath or not. Featured in the videos and hailed as his “rock” was his girlfriend and model Erika Costell.
“Jerika” Split In November
The pair were together for roughly 7 months before splitting just a month after Shane Dawson’s series premiered. Paul is no stranger to staging marriages, it appears, since in June 2017 he uploaded a video that shows he and Erika getting married. He later admitted the marriage was fake and they weren’t even dating at the time it was shot.
Their relationship reportedly started as a stunt for videos after Alyssa Violet, Paul’s ex-girlfriend and Costell’s ex-best friend, had ended things with Paul. Their relationship quickly evolved into something real and the breakup was amicable.
They Got Together Right Away
As soon as Tana’s breakup with Sousa was official, she took to her YouTube to upload a video on April 28th titled “I got cheated on but that’s okay” to announce the split. It was emotional, it was candid, and we all walked away from it knowing that this queen was going to heal and bounce back in no time.
We didn’t expect that it would take two literal days. On April 30th, a week after her breakup and two days after her video about Sousa, Mongeau posted a video titled “Mukbang in Bed With My Rebound Jake Paul.”
“Jana” Was Formed
Even though it sounds… suggestive, a “Mukbang” is an eating challenge on YouTube where participants eat large quantities of food and talk about their lives. The title says it all though, and left the internet laughing in disbelief at “Jana.”
People quickly began to suspect that the two were jokingly flirting for “clout.” Clout is the new age term for fame and fortune. Since the two were both featured on Dawson’s YouTube channel as YouTubers whose image he was helping rebuild, people thought the pair were hanging out to reach a broader audience.
“Jana” Followed In “Jerika’s” Footsteps
Paul seemed like he’s done this before — and that’s because he has. A few weeks after Tana dropped the video announcing her “rebound” with Paul, she uploaded a video called “WE BECAME PARENTS FOR 24 HOURS” where she and Paul babysat “Mini Jake Paul.” It’s a toddler that looks like him. Don’t ask us why.
Paul has uploaded similar babysitting style videos before with, you guessed it, Erika. He uploaded “Mini Jake Paul & Erika Go On Their First Date” on July 30th, 2018 and it follows the same format as Tana’s video. He’s got a system for sure.
Throw Some Matching Tattoos In There In Case It Wasn’t High Stakes Enough
Paul took a walk down memory lane again when he got matching tattoos with Tana in a video she published on May 30th, just like he did with Erika Costell. Jake, we’re sensing a parallel here. Are you okay? Can you please stop making permanent decisions?
If that wasn’t wild enough, Paul got his Jana tattoo inches from his Jerika one and the tattoo ended up being a tally mark for every month they were together. Ladies and gentlemen, the video is a watch.
Tana Got Busy Getting Real. Reality TV Real
For anyone who’s watched even one Tana Mongeau video, you know that this girl has a life that would be a literal cash cow for any reality TV producer. She’s been romantically involved with rapper Lil Xan, is very open about her sugar daddy relationship, and lives in a California mansion with 5 of her influencer best friends and manager.
MTV caught wind of the 20-year-old YouTuber’s extreme life and did what they should’ve done a year ago and made her into a reality TV star and launched web show “Tana Turns 21” on YouTube.
Where Would Jake Be?
When Tana announced she would be filming the MTV show on April 29th, the day before she revealed Paul was her rebound, people were curious about his involvement in the series. Paul is a mega-YouTuber himself and the MTV exposure would be great for them and for him. But was the relationship real enough for reality?
Apparently, yes. The question of whether or not Paul and Tana were actually dating would take up most of the series’ drama. Nobody knew for sure, and MTV was banking on it.
Jake’s Involvement Turned The Series Into Something Else
The MTV series was supposed to follow Tana’s wild life as she recovered from her (very recent) breakup with Sousa all the way up to her 21st birthday when she would be able to have her first sip of alcohol. But Jake and Tana, in case you haven’t realized by now, lead lives that can’t really be predicted by businessmen in suits at MTV.
Nobody really saw what happened coming. Literally nobody. It was an announcement on the level of the Kylie Jenner pregnancy reveal and we’re still shocked. Thanks for the heart palpitations, Jake.
They Got Engaged On Her 21st Birthday
We sensed a season extension negotiation in the works at MTV the minute this news came out. What was supposed to be a finale turned into just another episode, and Tana’s 21st birthday served as the backdrop for Jake’s proposal. Since they’re busy people and expert multitaskers, he did it on stage at the nightclub they were at celebrating her birthday. This. Is. Romance.
Paul posted the news at the beginning of July and oh my God were we not expecting that. They were dating for almost 2 months before getting engaged. Tana’s from Vegas but she probably couldn’t have predicted this.
What Else Did He Get Her For Her Birthday Tho
It wasn’t just a big ol’ ring, it was a buss’ down Rollie. That’s a Rolex if you need a translation. He also got his fiancé, who doesn’t drive, by the way, a $124,000 Mercedes G Wagon. You know, just a simple winter vehicle to take to the grocery store.
Tana has a series on her YouTube channel where she gets people in her life to teach her how to drive, and yeah, now she’s got some incentive to really learn. You may even see her at driver’s ed.
How It Profited Them
Since the two went public with their engagement, people have been speculating this was all a part of the plan with MTV and to get Tana and Paul more of that elusive “clout.” If it was part of the timing of the decision, then it was a profitable one.
Since the two began their relationship, Tana’s YouTube views have skyrocketed from a steady 20 million in April to 40 million by the middle of May. Paul’s views haven’t changed at all and stayed steady at 120 million or so per month.
Her Friends Were Basically As In The Dark As We Were
Thanks to Tana’s best friends and housemates Imari and Ashly, MTV got some solid footage, and we’ve basically never related harder to any content on the internet. They were just as confused and in the dark as we were about the whole event. Even her manager Jordan said he had no idea what was going on.
Now, either Tana has been journalling exclusively about her feelings or this is a clever move by MTV and her team to keep the audience interested. Either way, we’re still watching the show.
The Wedding Happened. It Really Did.
Since every news source was questioning the validity of the pair’s engagement, the MTV show was updating us weekly on how Paul’s team was moving the date around, and Tana’s friends only shrugged. In the end, we were all shocked Jana tied the knot. Boy did they ever.
On July 28th, the two got married at the graffiti mansion in Las Vegas by a minister who is also Jake’s manager. An important thing to note is that the two never actually signed any wedding papers, so they’re not legally married. Tana explains on her YouTube that this is because they’re not “traditional.”
Jake Cut The Cake With A Samurai Sword Among Other Highlights
Honestly, of course he did. If you were expecting a normal wee little knife from YouTube’s bad boy, then you’ve got to go and watch a few more videos. They’re not “traditional,” let’s say it all together folks.
The reception was held at the famous Sugar Factory restaurant in Las Vegas, a place Tana frequents, and there they cut the cake. Well, Paul did, with a sword, and then danced and slid around in the mess on the floor. This is rule #9898437 why you should tip your server folks.
They Ran Out Of Liquor And There Was A Fistfight
Since the pair are very famous YouTubers, many of their guests were also social stars themselves and documented the entire experience. YouTuber Chris Klemens documented the Jana wedding, and at one point he mentions the graffiti mansion had run out of champagne and they had grabbed the last bottle.
There was also a fistfight at the altar that definitely wasn’t planned by MTV or any of the other people involved. Nope. A mysterious man just happened to throw his drink on the bride, Jake fought him off, and then security jumped in. Thank you, knight in shining Gucci shoes.
They Flew There In Style
While the rest of their guests Ubered to the venue, Tana, Jake, and their closest friends arrived in style to the wedding venue. Things were already heating up before the wedding night though, as the jet featured some interesting scenes right in front of Paul’s mother.
Riley Reid, the famous adult film star, was in attendance and her shirt was off, Tana and Paul got down and dirty on the floor, and they invited the flight attendant serving their party to be a bridesmaid hours before the wedding. Tana tweeted the events with the hashtag #JanaForever.
The Honeymoon Never Happened
The pair were supposed to jet off to Spain immediately following the ceremony. This is pretty romantic, except it didn’t happen. As it turns out, both members of Jana couldn’t find their passports before they left for Vegas and Tana had a family emergency following the wedding. So they didn’t go.
We’re not surprised by the passports — something was bound to fall through the cracks at a wedding that was put together in under a month. Jake instead went to Ibiza with his brother at the beginning of August.
You Had To Pay $50 To Tune In
For all of us whose invites got lost in the mail, Jana had us covered. The two made the executive decision to live stream their wedding on Halogen TV that people would have to pay $50 to tune in to see.
Many viewers demanded refunds for the service since the feed was spotty, the audio was bad, and it would randomly freeze and cut out. We’re just wondering why they didn’t wait the week for the MTV episode to come out. Anyway, all we have to say is #JanaForever.
