These Celebrity Weddings Had Their Fair Share Of Mishaps
Stars! They're just like us! Even if their weddings might have million-dollar budgets and be in lavish locations with A-list celebrities filling the pews, there's still always a chance things will go wrong.
From royal weddings to reality TV royalty, celebrities are not exempt from wedding mishaps. Two celebrities on this list actually managed to set their own dresses on fire, so even though your husband's best man had one too many drinks before making his toast, you can take comfort in knowing that even celebrities' special days don't always go exactly as planned either!
Jessica Simpson & Eric Johnson
During her 2014 nuptials to hubby Eric Johnson, Jessica Simpson made a minor misstep when she said the wrong name during her vows to Johnson.
Before you jump to conclusions, she didn't say the name of another man, nothing that exciting. Simpson was just so nervous that instead of addressing Eric in the vows, she actually said her own name! An easy moment to laugh off, and the rest of their wedding went off with no issues.
Kym Johnson & Robert Herjavec
Kym Johnson — a former Dancing With The Stars pro — and Robert Herjavec met in 2015 when Herjavec was a contestant on DWTS, and the pair married a year and a half later in July 2016.
Though the ceremony was lavish and beautiful, there was one tiny incident that nearly ruined it all: Johnson's dress caught on fire in the middle of their ceremony. It turns out the gown had passed over a candle on her way to the altar which set part of the dress on fire. All's well that ends well right?
Hilary Duff & Mike Comrie
On the day of her 2010 nuptials to her now ex-husband Mike Comrie, Hilary Duff had a dental emergency that nearly threw off the whole day. What was the emergency? While eating a bagel in the morning — seems like a fairly safe, easy breakfast choice, right? — Duff lost a tooth. She took a bite of the bagel and her tooth came out with it.
It happened three hours before she was supposed to walk down the aisle, but her wedding planner Mindy Weiss diffused the situation and found her a last minute dentist appointment! The ceremony wasn't even delayed.
Troian Bellisario & Patrick J. Adams
Suits star Patrick J. Adams and Pretty Little Liars' Troian Bellisario got married in an epic three-day glamping celebration outside of Santa Barbara in 2016, equipped with upgraded tents, food trucks, and a renovated old school bus to transport guests.
The issue that came about was while the "Almost Married" bus was transporting some rowdy groomsmen to the ceremony, it got stuck in the mud near the campground. While suited up, the groomsmen and fellow wedding guests had to push the bus through the mud, but the weekend as a whole worked out just as the couple dreamt it would.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are a couple who never shy away from being honest and realistic on social media or in interviews, and recanting the story of their wedding was no different.
Everyone knows weddings always start a little late, but in the case of Teigen and Legend's wedding, they hosted a four-hour cocktail hour before the ceremony. That's not what they had originally planned but bad weather held up a number of Legend's family members' flights and he wanted to wait for them, so they had to improvise and basically just get guests drunk for four hours.
Princess Diana & Prince Charles
The royals aren't excluded from wedding mishaps anymore than the rest of us! On the day of Princess Diana's legendary wedding to Prince Charles, there were a number of issues.
Princess Diana's tiara was reportedly so heavy it gave her a splitting headache, plus one of the teeny tiny bridesmaids fell down during the ceremony and started crying. The biggest issue though was that Lady Di said Charles' name wrong during their vows. She referred to him as "Philip Charles Arthur George" instead of "Charles Philip Arthur George." It's hard to keep that many names straight. We don't blame her.
Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds
Another couple that was playing with fire at their wedding was Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. The majority of the details surrounding their 2012 nuptials were kept on lockdown, but Lively revealed that she accidentally burned a hole through her Marchesa wedding gown.
She said in an interview that she was watching Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) perform, there were sparklers involved in the performance, then Lively looked down and realized one of the sparklers had burned a hole right through the front of her gown.
Dwayne Johnson
A few weeks after the announcement that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had married his girlfriend of over 10 years, Lauren Hashian, he posted a funny story to his Instagram about his daughter Jasmine, who was the flower girl for the ceremony.
Johnson said his daughter took the experience very seriously, but when rehearsing a few minutes before the ceremony, he quickly realized Jasmine had no intention of gently laying down the flowers. Instead, she wanted to "intensely throw the flowers with ruthless aggression." The Rock looks so proud, writing "that's my daughter!" Plus just look how happy she is!
Kim Kardashian West & Kanye West
In 2014, Kim Kardashian married Kanye West in an extravagant celebration in Florence, Italy, but it was not without its problems. Kimye reportedly had a number of issues leading up to the ceremony including wedding decor in the form of marble statues showing up damaged.
The most-talked about issue was with the guests' seating. The couple, rather than having place cards, opted to have guests' named carved into the stone tables. The problem? A number of the names were misspelled, and guests who brought unexpected guests ruined the seating because you couldn't exactly move the place cards.
Kristin Cavallari & Jay Cutler
Former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari married NFL veteran quarterback Jay Cutler in 2013, but it wasn't until she released her book in 2016 that fans learned of an unfortunate incident that happened before their wedding.
Cavallari was bitten on the eye by the couples' dog Brando the day of the wedding, and they nearly had to call it off! Cavallari's makeup artist managed to work some magic and cover up the wound, but it was definitely a near miss.
Ginnifer Goodwin & Josh Dallas
Once Upon A Time co-stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas were married in a very small, private ceremony in April 2014, and though they managed to pull off the last-minute ceremony, it almost didn't happen.
On the day of the wedding, their wedding planner's car was broken into and the thief stole a number of items, including the couple's ketubah, which is an integral part of a Jewish wedding ceremony. By some act of fate, two people who happened to speak Hebrew stumbled upon the paper on the streets of Hollywood (seriously) and managed to return it to the couple in time.
Seth Meyers & Alexi Ashe
NBC Late Night host Seth Meyers married his girlfriend of five years Alexi Ashe in 2013, but Ashe almost didn't make it down the aisle.
Meyers credits Ashe with the planning of their entire ceremony, but what Ashe didn't plan for was getting severe food poisoning the night before the wedding. Ashe was actually hospitalized overnight and was in the hospital for the morning of the wedding, but insisted on going through with the ceremony. She's a keeper for sure!
Nicky Hilton & James Rothschild
Businesswoman and socialite Nicky Hilton, daughter of hotel heir Richard Hilton, married James Rothschild, grandson of the 3rd Baron Rothschild, in 2015. Hilton wore a gorgeous $65,000 Valentino gown, but she nearly wrecked it when she managed to get part of her dress stuck underneath the wheel of a car before heading to the ceremony at Kensington Palace (yes, she got married at the Kensington Palace.)
Someone around her managed to notice before she walked too far or the car in question started to move, so the rest of the day went smoothly.
Sarah Michelle Gellar & Freddie Prinze Jr.
Mother nature nearly put a stop to fan-favorite celebrity couple Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr's Mexico wedding way back in 2002.
A destination wedding seemed like a good idea at the time, but their outdoor ceremony plans were dashed when they were hit with Hurricane Herman, so they moved the ceremony indoors. As if that wasn't enough, their guests also had to suffer through an earthquake as they were leaving the reception at the end of the night. They managed to survive two natural disasters on their wedding day, so they'll probably be together forever.
Solange Knowles & Alan Ferguson
Solange Knowles (you may have heard of her sister, Beyoncé) married video music director and long-time beau Alan Ferguson in 2014, and though her wedding party pictures were stunning (you know the ones we're talking about), it was not all smooth sailing for Solange.
Knowles reportedly was having a breakout the day before, so naturally, she wore more makeup than she normally does to cover up her blemishes. Unfortunately, that resulted in Knowles being covered in hives all over her body by the end of the reception. Hard to cover all that up!
Madonna & Sean Penn
A whirlwind romance, to say the least, Sean Penn and Madonna were married in August 1985, just a few months after they started dating. Madonna and Penn were the 'it' couple of the 80s, but they also wanted to keep their ceremony paparazzi free, or at least try to.
Rumor has it that when paparazzi in helicopters flew over their beach-front ceremony, Penn actually used a rifle to shoot at the helicopters. Penn was known for his altercations with the press, so it's not the most far fetched story.
Katherine Heigl & Josh Kelley
Actress Katherine Heigl married singer-songwriter, Josh Kelley, back in 2007. The actual day of their wedding saw no major issues, but it was what happened before and after their special day that was the problem.
Kelley went skiing just days before the wedding, something he hadn't done in years and wasn't experienced at. How did that turn out? He broke his nose while skiing and had to walk down the aisle with a crooked bruised nose. Then, when the couple was leaving for their honeymoon, Heigl realized she didn't have her passport and they almost missed their flight!
Audrina Patridge & Corey Bohan
During her Hawaiin wedding to now ex-husband Corey Bohan, The Hills and now The Hills: New Beginnings star Audrina Patridge had a major wardrobe malfunction while walking down the aisle.
While on her way to the altar, Patridge's veil caught on a wooden pole along the aisle and as she continued to walk, the veil was slowly pulled off until it ripped completely off. Patridge said she did her best to just grin and bear it, and her trusty bridesmaids were able to reattach it afterward!
Casey Wilson & David Caspe
Happy Endings actress Casey Wilson married Happy Endings writer David Caspe in 2014, but Wilson partied a little too hard at the reception. Wilson and Caspe were dancing with their guests when Wilson fell, hard.
Wilson said that her legs hurt so much the next day she couldn't even extend them properly, and they were leaving for their Italian honeymoon. The result? Caspe literally wheeling her through the airport. The comedic couple managed to find the funny in the situation though, and Wilson said they laughed their way through the airport.
Mark Ballas and BC Jean
Former Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas married singer-songwriter BC Jean in 2016, and obviously the music choices for the ceremony and reception were a big decision for the couple.
Jean was meant to walk down the aisle to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is one of Ballas' favorite songs, but the wrong version was played. It was meant to be a string version of the song, more subdued, but instead, the real version was played so it ended up being an intense walk to the altar!
