The 1975 Covered Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ And It Rules

I’ve been a huge fan of The 1975 since their breakout single “Sex.” Since then I’ve watched their popularity grow at a rapid rate. With relentless touring, writing, recording, and bookings at major festivals the band is primed to be one of the biggest chart toppers of 2016.

The British outfit is set to release their second full-length studio album, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, on Feb. 26th and is going hard promoting it with multiple radio and television spots, including a stop at the famed BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge show. Following suit of other music heavy hitters who have stepped in the studio, The 1975 chose another artist’s single to cover, which in this case was Justin Bieber‘s smash, “Sorry.”

The challenging thing for any artist covering a song is finding a way to make it completely their own, and after taking the video for a spin, there’s no doubt they CRUSHED it. Opting to play the song on a down tempo, they took it to a groovy level of soul fueled, funk R&B, jazzing it up with a little saxy-phone and deep bass line. Keeping up with their signature synth-pop sound, with the help of humming keys, Matt Healy brought just the right amount of growl, giving serious punctuation to pivotal points of the song.

I think it’s safe to say both versions of the song are killer, and if this is any indication of what to expect on the band’s new album, I’m completely and totally hooked.
