HIV and AIDS are back in the national spotlight once again. It seems that the Deep South is being hardest hit with the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses, which means black people are being hit hardest in this ongoing epidemic. New Orleans: 43 percentNearly 50 percent of individuals newly diagnosed with HIV infection reside in the Southern U.S.

Baton Rouge: 41.6 percent

Jackson, Mississippi: 36.7 percent

Washington, D.C.: 34.5 percent

Baltimore: 33.8 percent

Memphis, Tennessee: 32.6 percent

Atlanta: 30.3 percent

New York: 28.1 percent

Jacksonville, Florida: 28.1 percent
