How To Survive Rainy Days In LA

It has started! Fall is here and it’s that time of the year again, where LA experiences those couple of weeks of rain. I was used to the rain growing up, but when I moved to LA, I experienced a different kind of rain. It was cold and it varied from being light to heavy, instead of the constant flood from the sky that I was used to. It took me a while to get used to it and to figure out how to survive it.

One morning, you look out your window and it’s all gloomy and cloudy and grey and you don’t want to leave your nice comfy bed. I get it.

Unfortunately, you have to. There is work to be done. Whether it’s work or school or a one day only sale at Forever XXI, you have to get moving. Don’t be sad!

Turn that frown upside down! I’m here to help. I have spent a good 18 years of my life living in the torrential rain infested Miami, FL and I now consider myself a pro at handling the rain!

I know it may feel like this:

But it’s really just this:

Having experienced this:

I learned to appreciate this:

So let’s begin! The first thing, probably the most important, is to wear rain appropriate shoes.

There have been too many times where I have been caught in the rain in flip flops and end up slipping and sliding all over the place. Eventually, I give up and take them off and walk home bairfoot. I don’t suggest it. Heels or pumps are also a no-no unless absolutely necessary! Slipping in heals is way worse than sliding in flip flops.

You want your feet to be comfortable and you also don’t want your shoes to get soaking wet. That’s just asking for a cold. Cloth shoes are a no, like any slip-ons such as Toms. Basically, just avoid any shoes where water would mostly likely seep through the bottom.

Sneakers are always acceptable, as well as boots and if you are feeling dedicated, go out and get yourself a super cute pair of rain boots!

Next on the list is layers! If you do get caught in the rain, you don’t want to be soaking wet by the time you get to your destination, so layers are always a good idea. Sweaters, jackets, hoodies are all good options, something you can take off when you get there. Odds are, it will also be cold, so it’s always good to wear layers regardless.

Next up is pretty obvious: Umbrellas. The ultimate rain protection for yourself, your clothes and your hair. The rain in LA can be unpredictable at times, so it helps to always have a little umbrella handy for unexpected showers. These little umbrellas can easily fit into your bags.

It is really easy to let the grayscale outside affect your mood. It’s important to keep a positive attitude! Good things can come from the rain.

It brings us together.

You are not baking in the sun and who doesn’t love rainbows?
Cheer up, sport!

My last tip for surviving the LA rain is to be careful while driving. LA drivers do not know how to drive in the rain.

Don’t get crazy and avoid the people that do!

Follow these tips and you can survive the next couple of weeks! You can also reward yourself for getting out of bed with a nice warm pumpkin spice latte!

Who knows, maybe one day you will find yourself saying

How do YOU survive rainy days?
