Spooky Halloween Nail Art Tutorial: Pumpkins, Skulls And More

This weekend I experimented for the first time ever with nail art. For my first time, I don’t think they came out half bad, especially my right hand (the lower photo) which I had to paint with my left.

These designs are so simple that anyone can do them! I don’t have any professional nail equipment but you can create fun designs with a few basic things from the drugstore – unlike all the complicated tools I see on the nail tutorials on YouTube.

I’m a constant nail biter so these are already ruined but c’est la vie.

You’ll Need

a Nail Art Pen (in black, I used Sally Hansen’s)

Nail Polish (red, white, orange, blue, nude and purple)

Clear Topcoat

A toothpick or bobby pin

Check out how to recreate these designs below:

For the Pumpkin:

Paint your nail orange and allow it to completely dry. Once it is fully dried and no longer tacky at all, use your nail art pen to draw triangle eyes and a mouth. Allow the polish to dry and paint with a clear topcoat.

For the Skull:

Paint your nail white and allow to completely dry. Draw two circles for eyes, and upside down heart for the nose, and lines at the top of your nail for teeth with your nail art pen. Allow to dry and paint with a clear topcoat.

For the Eyeball:

Paint your nail white and allow the paint to dry. Dip a toothpick or the end of a bobby pin in your red polish and paint squiggly stripes over the white paint. The stripes should go to each end of the nail and intersect only at the center. Once the red polish has dried, carefully paint a circle with blue polish in the center of your nail. You can use your toothpick or bobby pin to help you spread out the polish. Allow the nail to dry completely, then use your nail art pen to draw a black circle in the center of the blue circle. Outline the blue circle with black as well. Dip your toothpick in white polish and apply to nail to create dots on the eye where light would reflect. Paint with clear topcoat once dry.

For the Dripping Blood:

Paint your nail with nude polish and allow to dry. Use your bobby pin to drop 3 dots of red along the center of your nail. Drag up the dots to the nail tip and fill in the empty space so they connect. Be very careful not to use too much polish when filling in the red. Allow this to dry and outline the red with your black nail art pen, then paint with a clear topcoat.

For the Mummy:

Paint your nail white and allow to dry. Use your nail pen to create the stripes. Fill one larger stripe in with black completely. Use a toothpick and white nail polish to dot the eyes, then repeat this step with red polish. Allow to dry and paint with a clear topcoat.

For the Spider Web:

Paint your nail with purple polish and allow to dry. Once the paint is completely dry, draw a spider on the lower half of your nail with your nail art pen and complete with a clear topcoat.

I also painted sugar skulls on my sisters toes! This was before we cleaned up the polish around the outside.
