Put Your Records On: LIGHTS’ ‘Siberia’ Turns 2

Today, October 4, marks the two year anniversary of LIGHTS‘ sophomore album, Siberia. This album continues to inspire me. I hear something new every time I give it a listen which ultimately makes it timeless, in my opinion.

When Siberia was released, I felt like I was at a standstill. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life so songs like “Heavy Rope” and “Cactus In The Valley” were extremely powerful. Eventually I found my way, and I found a specific lyric for every part of the journey – “Where The Fence Is Low” and “Banner,” especially.

While I still feel I’m at some sort of standstill, Siberia is always there to pick me up and remind me of what I’m fighting for. “Flux and Flow” remains my favorite (besides the title track) off of the album. “When we taste a bitter end and hunger life again, we take another turn with a better hand.” No other song describes me so well. I’m constantly in a state of flux and then once I pray about things I get a sense of peace wash over me and everything’s okay…until I start to worry again. It’s exausting. “Show ’em how you bend without breaking.”

The last track, “…And Counting” describes certain aspects of my current situation. “When I fall asleep I feel you with me…” It’s depressing but good to know that I’m not alone in this.

For the past two years, Siberia has been my companion for every high and every low. It’s amazing what music can do.
