Album Review: HAIM’s ‘Days Are Gone’
Indie/alternative trio HAIM (pronounced like “time”) released their debut album, Days Are Gone, yesterday and the one word that came to mind during my first listen was “refreshing.” I think it’s safe to say that there aren’t any bands out there right now that sound like this sister trio, so in a music industry like today when everything seems to be interchangeable, it’s an invigorating change. With inspiring elements from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, Days Are Gone proves to be one of most well-crafted albums of 2013 and shall continue to push boundaries in the years to come.
The album starts off with “Falling” – a song I identify with and one I would consider to be an anthem of sorts for myself at this point in my life. With lyrics like “just hold your head up and if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough” motivates us to keep calm and carry on, no matter how rough the seas may be and if it gets hard, well then we’ll just have to walk through it. The end turns into a mantra that is bound to get stuck in your head at some point with no complaint: “Never look back, never give up.”
The album continues with EP favorites such as “Forever,” “The Wire,” and “Don’t Save Me” while seamlessly channeling an 80’s pop radio vibe with “If I Could Change Your Mind” and “Honey and I.” The album’s title track, “Days Are Gone” effortlessly blends everything I could possibly love about a song in less than four minutes while still keeping me on my toes even through multiple listens.
“My Song 5” comes in with a bang. It’s almost as if Lenny Kravitz and TLC hijacked their studio and decided to just jam out. Mixing elements of R&B and rock suits these ladies well; meanwhile, “Let Me Go” is like walking into a time warp where Janis Joplin is still alive and kickin’. There really is nothing they can’t do.
HAIM’s Days Are Gone is an album to experience differently each and every listen. I’m excited to see what I discover next listen.
