Music Obsession: Purity Ring

To those of you that don’t know, I have always been a sucker for a good music duo. One duo in particular that I really love is Purity Ring. I first heard Purity Ring when I was watching a video where one of their songs was the background music. My first reaction was “What in the world is this”? and “I must know who this song is by immediately.” Purity Ring’s music could be described as electronic, which is very different from what I usually listened to. Listening to Purity Ring really helped open me up to many other great artists who could be described as electronic as well. In a blog I wrote a few days ago, which you can read here, I breifly wrote about how I really liked Purity Ring. In this blog, I am going to go deeper into my love for Purity Ring and give you more information about the duo.

On April 24, 2012, the duo released their first single, Obedear, which then lead to the release of Purity Ring’s debut album, Shrines, July 20, 2012. Shrines is an album that really infatuates and interests me for many different reasons. Megan’s amazing voice and Corin’s great beats combined together make such a unique sound that leaves you wanting more. Their song titles are very different, not giving you any hint of what the song will be about. Unlike many other electronic artists, Purity Ring is actually very good live in concert. Their lyrics are very creative, one of my favorite being from the song Belispeak which says “Drill little holes into my eyelids, that I might see you, that I might see you when I sleep.” To top it off, the album cover for Shrines really attracted me to listen to the album and constanttly leaves me pondering what the artwork means, leaving me madly inspired.

Something that really sets Purity Ring apart from other duos is the original beat making instrument that Corin invented and built that he plays during live shows. This instrument not only makes sound when he hits it but it also lights up with different colors and the machine controlls the lighting on stage!
