Skye Sweetnam: Still Making Noise, Just Not In The Basement

If you were anything like me in high school, your Friday nights consisted of kicking back in front of the TV and watching the Friday night lineup on The N (now Teen Nick) with shows like Degrassi: The Next Generation and Radio Free Roscoe. It was on The N in the summer of 2004 that I discovered Canadian rock princess Skye Sweetnam.

Skye sang the theme song to Radio Free Roscoe and her songs “Billy S” and “Tangled Up In Me” played during the commercial breaks. In September 2004, Skye released her debut album, Noise From The Basement, which peaked at #124 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. That led Sweetnam to go on tour with pop royalty, Britney Spears, on her Onyx Hotel Tour. In October 2007, Skye released her sophomore album, Sound Soldier, which featured a duet with her hero, Tim Armstrong, of punk band Rancid on the track “(Let’s Get Movin’) Into Action.”

Fast forward to the present and 24 year-old Skye is now the frontwoman of rock/metal band Sumo Cyco. Sumo Cyco formed in 2011 and had their first live show opening for Hollywood Undead. Sumo Cyco has a strong presence online, and direct both their own music videos and promotional films. Musically, their sound blends heavy metal guitars, fast beats, and dance hall rhythms. They even won Best Female Fronted Band at the Toronto Independent Music Awards in 2012!

I always knew Skye was destined to be a full-fledged rock star! It’s great to see her still making noise…good noise, even if it’s not from the basement. I wonder if she’s still kicking the Coke machine… 😉

Are you a fan of Skye’s? What do you think of her band, Sumo Cyco?
