2013: The Bands Who Should See Success This Year
At this time of year we’re lead to believe that music critics are drowning themselves in the latest sounds trying to discover the ‘next-big-thing’. However, when blogger’s buzz lists and hipster’s hints begin to feature the same artists, you start to wonder if writers are just googling “2013 hot new bands” and copy and pasting pre-existing predictions. While some artists warrant repetition due to their obvious talents, others are only tipped because of the hype surrounding their original ‘tip’, rather than their music itself.
To break away from this tired formula, here are three bands who should be big next year. That’s not saying they will be ‘big’ but it means they have the potential to be.
These are hopes, not predictions – and personal opinions, not statements.
The 1975

Justifiably tipped by iTunes as ones to watch for 2013, Manchester’s The 1975 deserve to blow up when they release their debut album this Spring.
WHAT DO THEY SOUND LIKE?: Melodic yet moody indie rock with catchy choruses and a crisp coolness.
WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?: On a headline tour across the UK beginning the 22nd of Jan.
WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO FIRST?: ‘Sex‘
Crowns

Crowns‘ debut album of sea shanty sounds ‘Stitches In The Flag‘ dropped in November but should get its biggest wave of success when it reaches new audiences live.WHAT DO THEY SOUND LIKE?: Sailors having a traditional sing-song, in the best possible way.
WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?: On tour supporting Dropkick Murphys this month.
WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO FIRST?: ‘Kissing Gates‘
Natives

Natives were nominated for ‘Best British Newcomer 2012‘ in the Rock Sound Readers’ Polldespite having only released a handful of songs. Once new songs are out, their profile is set to explode.
WHAT DO THEY SOUND LIKE?: Upbeat pop-rock with a hint of California sunshine but still remains distinctly British. (They also sound a bit like Not Advised)
WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?: Radstock Festival, March 30th, Liverpool.
WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO FIRST?: ‘This Island‘
