“Call Me Maybe” Appreciation Post: Song of 2012

I’m sure you’ve all heard “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. If not, what rock have you been living under?? Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that it’s super catchy and very much relatable. There’s no escaping it either; if you turn on the radio, you’re bound to hear it. I’m sure it haunts you everywhere you go. At first I wasn’t that crazy about it. It kind of annoyed me at first but once I found out more about Carly Rae, I started to love it. I’m a sucker for cheesy pop music.

“Call Me Maybe” was written by Jepsen and Tavish Crowe as a folk song, but was modified to a pop song with help from producer Josh Ramsay. The song received positive reviews from critics, who praised its composition and clever lyrics. “Call Me Maybe” has attained commercial success worldwide, reaching number one in Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, while peaking inside the top three in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. After reaching the top position in Canada, Jepsen became the fifth Canadian artist to do so in her home country since 2007! Here in the US, the track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Pop Songs chart. The song is the first number one by a Canadian female artist on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since 2007’s “Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne. With worldwide sales of over 10 million copies, “Call Me Maybe” is one of the best-selling digital singles of all time. Whoa!

With success of a fun pop song, it’s inevitable that there’s going to be parodies! They’re still pouring in today! Artists such as Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Fun., Big Time Rush, and Cody Simpson have all covered the song. President Obama, some of the news staff at NPR and even Cookie Monster have even taken a chunk of “Call Me Maybe” fame on YouTube.

“Call Me Maybe” was even nominated for two Grammy Awards, for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 55th Annual ceremony, which will be held on February 10, 2013!

I think it goes without saying that “Call Me Maybe” was and still is the song of 2012 and is pretty much a pop culture phenomenon. You can agree or disagree but the facts are all there….and there’s no escaping that catchy chorus!

What are your thoughts on “Call Me Maybe?” Song of 2012? Yay or Nay?
