What Came First Fashion Or The Art?

To me it’s one of those chicken and the egg scenarios. Really what comes first the fashion or the art? I feel like personally both jive off each other at all times, so it’s hard to tell. Good examples are the Andy Warhol and Factory explosion. Andy was the one who really put pop culture on the map as a life style. Edie Sedgwick was just one of the many fashion creation of this. Without Andy Warhol’s art, there would of been no Edie Sedgwick and who know’s what 60’s fashion would of been without them. Betsey Johnson when she first started out was designing custom clothing for Edie, if there was no Andy Warhol art there may have not been the Betsey Johnson we know and love today.

Another example of fashion and art merging in the same era of the 60’s is Vidal Sassoon. His canvas was hair and he is one of the most amazing, original, talented hair artists to ever live. He invented and changed fashion with his modern cuts. He created the Twiggy, The Eddie, The Peggy Moffitt. You know the girl behind you in class with the asymmetrical hair cut, that was Vidal’s doing. Changing the hair to more edgy modern sleek cuts changed the fashion as well. Without Vidal here would of been no Mods… without the Mods all our current resurrection of 60s style today may not exist.

Everything in life is a domino effect and nothing is purely original. Everything steams from a inspiration of another. To me fashion is art and art is fashion.THOUGHTS? Agree or Disagree?
