Artist Of The Month: Garbage

Hello and welcome to the third installment of Artist Of The Month! This month, my featured artist is Garbage.

I first discovered the band Garbage when I was about 7 years old. I saw the video for “Stupid Girl” on MTV and VH1 but I never really paid much attention until about 6 years later. I came across their song “I Think I’m Paranoid” and became obsessed after that. I know I was kind of late to jump on the bandwagon but it doesn’t matter when; it all has to do with why.

When I first became interested in Garbage, I was just entering high school. I had been bullied a lot that year by two of my supposed “friends” and everything started to become a battle. Just waking up and walking into school was a fight. I’m sure a lot of you can relate. I got through it though…all thanks to Garbage. With songs like “The Trick Is To Keep Breathing,” “Vow,” “Medication,” and “Special” I was able to somehow channel their lyrics as my strength. It’s hard enough being 14, and being bullied was, at the time, unbearable but I’d like to think that Shirley Manson was able to help me through that and now I am a stronger person because of their music. I don’t know if any of this makes sense but to me it does.

When I think of Garbage, the two words that come to mind are ‘iconic’ and ‘underrated.’ They deserve far more credit and recognition than they get. Hopefully with their forthcoming album, Not Your Kind Of People, (out May 15th on iTunes and everywhere else May 22nd) they’ll get the attention they deserve.

I’m getting the chance to see Garbage on tour in a few weeks! Words cannot express how excited I am for this! I heard tickets sold out within the first 10 minutes and I’m still shocked that I was one of the lucky people to score one! I’ll be blogging about my experience, of course, so look out for that within the coming weeks!
