Eggsential Easter Playlist
Unlike Christmas, Easter is not blessed with (or cursed by) a plethora of topical pop songs. However, if you are planning on sticking on some bunny ears and gorging in chocolate this weekend then this playlist is for you. Here’s a compilation of the best lyrically relevant tunes. Eggcellent! That’s the last egg-pun, honestly.
Sia – Death By Chocolate
When Sia penned this, she probably wasn’t imagining an Easter egg overdose but for these next few days we can interpret it this way. If you feel like you’ve eaten too much, Sia offers reassurance with “Death by chocolate is myth. This I know because I lived”.
Panic! At The Disco – Mad As Rabbits
“Pretty. Odd” has been a staple album on Spring playlists since its 2008 release. Again it’s not literally about Easter (or even rabbits) but it has that pre-summer vibe so earns it’s spot here. “He took the days for pageant became as mad as rabbits”
Goldfrapp – Hunt
Running around somebody’s garden looking for hidden treasures? Yes? What’s your age again? Whether you’re young or old, you can almost get away with stealing candy from a baby this weekend. Goldfrapp‘s line “All you love you destroy. Everyone is your toy” is obviously referencing Kinder Surprises.
Patrick Stump – Blues Rabbits F**king
Can’t think of an Easter film other than “Hop“? How about Avatar? I know what you’re thinking, the connection isn’t immediately obvious but the Na’Vi people do like the rabbits…and they do love to f**k. I think it’s pretty clear that this parody is NSFW. (p.s you can watch the official video here)
Florence & The Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
There’s something in our consumerist subconscious that makes an association between Alice In Wonderland and Easter, and this song also blurs the story of “the looking glass” with “the spring”. “Here I am a rabbit hearted girl frozen in the headlights”
Snow Patrol – Chocolate
Yesterday, The Guardian appealed for reader recommendations for an Easter playlist. They explained their plea by stating “Let’s commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ by suggesting songs about Creme Eggs, Crunchies and Curly Wurlys”. One song which was mentioned was “Chocolate” by Snow Patrol which, confusingly, is not about confectionery.
Chas ‘N Dave – Rabbit
Rabbit is not just an animal, it’s also cockney rhyming slang for chattering (Rabbit and Pork – ‘talk’). It would be impossible to compile a playlist which even vaguely linked to bunnies without mentioning this cult classic. “Rabbit bunny jabber yup yup yup rabbit bunny jabber yup yup bunny jabber rabbit ect”
Christina Aguilera – Candyman
Prepare for the innuendo. If the Easter Bunny were some good looking, stock-photo-friendly man, this would fit in the playlist just fine. The Easter Bunny is actually a bunny but it’s weaved its way in anyway. “He’s a one stop shop, makes my cherry pop. He’s a sweet talkin’ sugar coated candy man”
The Magnetic Fields – Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits
What could be more innocent and festive than pretending you’re a bunny rabbit? Well, The Magnetic Fields weren’t exactly singing about hopping across the house pretending you’re bucktoothed. Think back to “Blue Rabbits F**king”. “When we’ve had a couple’a’beers, we’ll put on bunny suits. I long to nibble your ears and do as bunnies do”.
