Should You Or Shouldn’t You? 5 Cool Things About Attending College

Your high school career is almost over and though you enjoy your part-time job at the mall, the thought of making your weekend mall job a full-time permanent one just doesn’t satisfy you. While the idea of applying to higher education seems pretty intimidating (cue thoughts of “Will I get in?” “How can I afford to pay for it?” “Is it REALLY worth four more years of school?”), the benefits of going to college could very well surpass and nullify those uncertainties. Hey, if Emma Watson could do it, so can you!

Here are five reasons why you should look into going to college:

1. The dorm life. If you have never shared a room with someone, you’re in for a bit of a shock. Unless you’re one of the few lucky (or unlucky, however you interpret it) folks who get a single dorm room, chances are you’ll get to learn A LOT about living with other people – as well as learn a lot about yourself.

2. Independence. After living 18 years under your parents’ roof, being away at college can be quite overwhelming… in a good way! Just think: no chores, no curfew, no one to tell you do your homework, and you can invite over whomever you want, whenever you want. Score!

3. Brand new friends/boys. Speaking of inviting people over, what better way to get to know a person than being able to hang out often? With your own place (aka your dorm room) and no curfew, there are plenty of opportunities to hang with the new buds you make. Many people meet their BFFs as well as their BFs in college.

4. New experiences. With these new friends also come new personalities and new ways of thinking. That exotic restaurant down the street from school that your new friend swears is amazing? Admit it, you would never have tried it if it weren’t for her! That intense heated debate in class or having celebrity speakers (as Lady Gaga and Oprah did at Harvard on February 29th)? Not something you see every day in your average high school classroom!

5. The ability to follow your dreams. After you’ve completed the mandatory general education classes, you really get to hone in on your major and focus solely on your interests. And other than the academic aspect of attending classes, socially you’ll be able to meet and network with some soon-to-be experts in your field. How awesome is that?!
