Walter Talks Geeking Out, Being a Coffee Boy, and Makes a Confession

If you haven’t seen the newest Muppets movie yet, you probably have no idea who Walter is – you probably don’t even know that he is the newest addition to the Muppets family. Never fear, we’ve got the inside scoop on him! Walter makes his big screen debut as Walter the new Muppet in the latest box office hit The Muppets, joining the original iconic cast of the famed show.

Buzznet caught up with Walter and had a chat with the newbie Muppet, who talked to us about geeking out in the presence of a certain green frog, Miss Piggy mistakening him for the coffee boy and gave us a SHOCKING confession.

Buzznet: The Muppets movie is your film debut. What was that experience like?

Walter the Muppet: It was overwhelming. I play the character of Walter in the movie and Walter is this huge Muppet fan. Ironically in real-life, I’m a HUGE Muppet fan, so it was a huge thrill performing alongside my heroes. It’s a little overwhelming at times. That scene where I first meet and geek out over Kermit… that actually happened! And Kermit was like, “Is he going to be doing this the whole time?” It was a little embarrassing, but wonderful.

BN: Did you all get along right away or did it take some time to warm up to each other?

WM: The Muppets are such a welcoming group. After I got over being star struck constantly – which I’m not sure I completely and truly got over – they were great to me since the very beginning. Almost all of them. Almost. I shouldn’t talk about, uh… them. Miss Piggy was great, really great… I think to this day she still thinks I’m the coffee boy.

BN: What was your favorite part while filming the movie?

WM: First of all I was acting alongside in scenes with Amy Adams and Jason Segel, and that was such a huge honor, and then I’m doing all these scenes with the Muppets. It’s so difficult to choose just one, but probably everything that we shot in the Muppets theater was my favorite scene because it was like the Muppet Show was back. And the excitement and the humor and the fun – the Muppets really know how to have a good time!

BN: In the movie, we see you struggle to find what your Muppet talent is. How did you discover your talent?

WM: (Laughs) It’s funny that I didn’t realize that singing and dancing could also be a talent, because I do quite a bit of that in the film. But I have a confession time: my talent of whistling was provided by a talented singer-songwriter named Andrew Bird, so I didn’t actually do my own whistling I’m sad to say. But I did do my own stunts, which apparently is also a talent of mine. I’m really good at getting hurt.

BN: If you could trade places with another Muppet, who would you be and why?

WM: Ooooh, tough one! I think I’d like to be Dr. Teeth, because he’s so cool. He’s always saying the right thing. He’s like, “Oh, what’s up with the happening cool cats and dogs!” You see, I totally fail at it, which is why I’d love to try to be him for a while and see what it’s like to be him. Plus he’s got a rockin’ voice!

BN: Do the ladies prefer a Muppet of a man or a very manly Muppet?

WM: (Laughs) That’s a very funny question. I’m not even sure what that means! It’s hard to speak for the ladies. I think Miss Piggy probably prefers a very manly Muppet and I think Amy Adams would prefer a Muppet of a man. I don’t know if you can tell from the movie or from talking to me but I don’t have much experience with what the ladies prefer.

BN: What’s next for you Walter?

WM: Kermit the Frog once said he had a dream about singing and dancing and making people happy. That’s the kind of dream that does better the more people you share it with. I take Kermit’s words to heart; I want to share the Muppets with everybody. I want to make sure everybody hears about them and knows about them, that they keep singing and dancing and telling jokes and being great. And I hope I get to go out and sing and dance and tell jokes with them!
