NYE Playlist: What To Sing To Ring In The New Year
New Year’s Eve. It’s just another night of the year, but it’s the last night night of the year. So which song do you want to be your last of 2011, and which do you wish to be your first of 2012? So whether you’re staying in watching NYE-themed telly (like me, because I’m that rock ‘n’ roll) or partying as either a guest or host, I have only one thing to say to you – Happy New Year!
Katy Perry – Firework
Although the singer herself may not be ending her year on a high, her 2010 smash hit will still be on my many party playlist this/next year. Expect many of her other number one singles (AKA every song off “Teenage Dream”) to be staples in many DJ’s shows too.
Patrick Stump – Explode
Yes, we are supposed to be ringing in the new year not the end of the world but according to some they’re the same. The Mayans say that NYE 11/12 is going to be humankind’s last, so your party may as well go out with a bang. BUT even if the world does end next December, you’ll still have to live with your drunken mistakes for almost a year so maybe you should add “Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers)” to your playlist too.
Beyoncé – Countdown
Although the song’s considered a marmite track by many, “Countdown” makes the list on title alone. Beyoncé herself is set to have a life-changing start to 2012 with rumours flying around everywhere that she has given/currently giving birth to her first child. I’m assuming that her baby is a 10, and they’re dressing to the 9.
Zooey Deschanel and Joseph-Gordon Levitt – What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?
Getting into the holiday spirit, besties and co-stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph-Gordon Levitt unleashed a cover of Nancy Wilson’s “What Are You Doing On New Year’s Eve?”. Now Zooey Deschanel’s voice can be synonymous with New Year as well as Christmas – what other holidays can she take over?
LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem
You tell everyone you hate it…but everyday, you’re shuffling. This has been played at every party in 2011 since it’s release so don’t expect to not hear it NYE. If you’re a hater, once you’ve given into cheer pressure, you won’t have to do it again until next year – I promise. Oh wait.
We Are The City – “Happy New Year”
Appropriate name. Check. Playlist inclusion? Yeah, go on. Misleadingly, the song is not actually lyrically relevant but guitars were absent from the list and it’s a catchy song and “I feel love inside my heart” so they’ve sneaked in the playlist anyway.
Prince – 1999
Ok, Ok we may be celebrating the arrival of 2012 not 1999 but there is still no better year related song out there. If you care to offer any updated alternatives, leave them after the jump. If not, just enjoy Prince because you ain’t going to find anything better.
If You’re British….
Jools Holland – Boogie Woogie
If you’re staying in this NYE and you live in the UK, you are obliged to watch Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. Forget the ‘scandal’ that it is pre-recorded and forgive them for all the LIES, LIES, LIES they’ve told you about it being live and embrace it. Jools, you are a legend.
And of course…join your arms and get singing Auld Lang Syne:
What’s your favourite New Year’s Eve song?
