Fashion In Film Volume 9: The Runaways

So far in my Fashion in Film segments, I’ve been referencing several grunge related films from the 90s (I can’t get enough of them), but this week I’d like to stray away for a moment and discuss a more recent favorite of mine, The Runaways. I am a huge sucker for all things Rock & Roll, so this film was right up my alley! The movie is about a 1970’s all-girl rock band of the same name (Kristen Stewart plays rhythm guitarist and vocalist Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning is Cherie Currie). The dark and dirty tale depicts the formation of the band in 1975, the relationship between Currie and Jett, and the rise and eventual fall of the band. The Runaways is full of nightclubs, sleazy men, lots of sex and drugs – and some of the best recent fashion on film.

When it comes to fashion, the two stars, Joan and Cherie, couldn’t be more different. Stewart as Jett channels the rough around the edges, rock star style to a tea – shag haircut, black-on-black, dark eyeliner and everything leather (trousers, jackets, vests, armbands). On the other side of the spectrum is Cherie. Starting out as a clean-cut, California blonde, and later adopting a sex kitten look – consisting of lace-edged bustiers and platform boots.I must say, I am absolutely in love with all the platform boots worn in the film…of every height, color and texture. And I definitely identify with Cherie Currie and her love (or rather slight obsession) with David Bowie. These girls definitely paved the way for rocker women all around the world.
