Fashion in Film Volume 1: The Craft

Welcome to the first installment of my new weekly segment, “Fashion in Film,” where I’m going to be discussing the incredible fashion from my all-time favorite movies! Let’s appropriately start with one of my biggest inspirations, The Craft, starring the amazingly talented Fairuza Balk and Neve Campbell! This movie majorly fits the bohemian-punky-goth feel thats going on this summer, so I figured a movie about Witchcraft would be perfect for my first post. The Craft is a 1996 film about a newcomer to a Catholic prep high school who falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft. They soon create a witch coven and conjure up various spells and curses against those who even slightly anger them. Fairuza Balk plays the crazy-ass leader of the coven to a tee! All in all, it is a very entertaining movie. There are some suspenseful moments and the scenes with the snakes and bugs are pretty creepy.

I recently watched this film again for the 100th time and deliberately took more notice of the fashion style shown throughout. I realized half my wardrobe is inspired by this movie! It has a major grungy, gothic 90s kind of vibe! I love the black maxi skirts, over-sized jumpers, over-knee socks, crop tops, the 90s skater-dress shape, gothic jewelery and Doc Martens. I must say, this film reminds me so much of my group of friends. Probably because we don’t conform to the norms of society and embrace our differences…In the movie, Nancy (played by Fairuza Balk AKA my hero) is so misunderstood, but her care-free IDGAF attitude makes her so BAD ASS! Check out the super cool photos and see for yourself!
