Selena Gomez vs. Selena Gomez: A Trip to ‘Monte Carlo’ Anyone?

It’s Selena Gomez versus… Selena Gomez?! In the new movie Monte Carlo, Grace (played by Selena) is an ordinary girl who, by complete luck and chance, becomes a princess for a week when her summer trip to Paris turns into the ultimate fantasy come true!

Fresh out of high school, Grace and her best friend Emma (played by Katie Cassidy) work at a waitressing job in their hometown of Texas and decide to make their dreams come true by taking a trip to Paris. Unfortunately things don’t go quite as planned when Grace’s stony stepsister Meg (played by Leighton Meester) is volunteered by Grace’s mom to chaperone the two girls and Emma’s boyfriend Owen (the adorable Cory Monteith) tries to put a stop to the trip by proposing. Nonetheless, the three set off to glorious France for a tourist adventure, only with the sheer luck of being miserable on their rushed tour group.

Their luck turns around when their group leaves them behind and Grace gets mistaken for British socialite Cordelia Winthrop Scott. With the possession of Cordelia’s invitation to a ritzy ball in her honor in Monte Carlo, the three seize the opportunity and live in the lap of luxury for the week, acquiring love interests along the way. It all comes to an end once the REAL Cordelia (played by… you guessed it: Selena Gomez!) unexpectedly shows up and the girls have to quickly cover up or come clean about their adventures. Unfortunately, the real Cordelia is super snarky and quite the queen bee, stinger and all.

How did Monte Carlo fare as a movie? The film bears a striking resemblance to the 2003 Hilary Duff movie Lizzie McGuire – but it works. Selena Gomez plays a dual version of herself as the down-to-earth Grace AND the high maintenance, prissy Cordelia, while Leighton Meester also shows a dual personality as she shifts from stony, uptight, play-by-the-rules Meg to the softer, more spontaneous Meg. Katie Cassidy makes the perfect Southern belle with a wild side, and Cory Monteith as her typical Southern gentleman boyfriend makes you want to swoon. Don’t forget to grab a tissue or two, as the movie touches on some very emotional issues at one point. Overall, it’s a cute, girly movie that will allow you to escape from reality and be transported to a romantic city, and will most DEFINITELY leave you yearning for a romantic vacation of your own!
