Catch a Wave (Via Your DVD Player)

So, in case today’s ads on Buzznet haven’t tipped you off, Blue Crush 2 releases on DVD today. And honestly, I am PSYCHED. And not just because one of my favorite bands is all over the soundtrack! See, I am intrigued by surfing, but I have never in my life set foot on a board. The best I can do is live vicariously through surfing movies.

And here’s three that I can go to every time:

Blue Crush

Yep! The original ranks as one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the fact that the primary struggle is about finding yourself and overcoming your own limitations, AND that it doesn’t resort to a love-triangle-type rivalry. And I will always cheer for the exchange:

Matt: Just be the girl I met on the beach. Anne Marie: Who? Who was she? Matt: The kind of girl who wouldn’t ask a guy what to do.

Surfer, Dude

A lesser known movie, this is a film that stars Matthew McConaughey being…well…Matthew McConaughey. Basically? A pro-surfer finds out that his contract has been bought out by a major corporation, that he’s been unwillingly signed up for a ridiculous reality show called “Surfer, Dude,” and that he’s stranded in Malibu with no waves. This movie also features Woody Harrelson being Woody Harrelson, a lot of weed and some goats. Oh, and a discussion about whether or not you could put stickers on dogs if you shaved them.

Surf’s Up

Yes, there is totally an animated movie on this list, but it is the only animated movie featuring a stoner chicken voiced by Napoleon Dynamite. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg (because it’s a movie about PENGUINS, get it?) for the star power: Shia Le Bouef, Zooey Deschanel, Jeff Bridges and James Woods are all featured in the movie. Plus, cameos from ESPN’s Sal Masekela and pro surfers Kelly Slater and Rob Machado. And this:

Now, this isn’t a COMPREHENSIVE list, by far, just three of my favorites. Do you guys have any you’d like to share?
