My Body Is Ready (For Cinco De Mayo)

Today is Cinco de Mayo. Contrary to popular belief, today is not Mexican Independence Day. That happens in September. Cindo de Today is mostly a holiday celebrated by people in the United States that marks the defeat of Le French at the Battle of Puebla. In other words, no one in Mexico really cares, unless you live in Puebla (citation needed).

** I actually contacted my HMIC (Head Mexican In Charge), @CaGeek79 to confirm this, and thus, it was confirmed.

Rather than get into this whole thing about whatever, I am just going to share with you some things that I grew up with that are awesome and from Mexico. Mostly, there is going to be a lot of food at the end because that just how I roll. Are you ready? Your answer should be:

La India Maria looks exactly like my G-ma. We used to watch these when we were small with her and this was a nick name that we had for her. The thing I remember most about La India Maria was that she could do backflips and kick anyones butt if they messed with her. Yup. She was just like my grandma.

When my grandma would yell at my sisters and me for dumping hot milk down the sink (that’s how she tried to get us to go to bed), she would chase us around the house and we would have to dodge her amazing chancla throwing skills.

Topo Gigio was originally aired on Italian/Spanish tv in the 60’s. It was a BIG DEAL in Latin America because obvs, it made its way into my house. Topo Gigio used to do this thing where he would move his hips in circles and my family used to make me do that FOR THEIR AMUSEMENT.

This is Cantinflas. The closest thing I can translate that name to is “someone who has baggy pants.” This was my nick name from my dad when I was little. My pants never used to stay on me and that was one of the schticks of Cantinflas. He was always pulling up his pants. I also used to have that weird, pre-pubescent Mexican boy mustache that looked like I had bubble gum on my upper lip, just like Cantinflas.

Needless to say, I used to do the little boxing shuffle like him, too, all for the amusement of my family.

When I was little, I used to do folklorico. Yup. I was a little bad ass. Mostly, I was the only boy in the group that I danced with so I had lots of lady attention that was well, you know, wasted. I even wore a little outfit like those dudes, except for the dance we did, we didn’t wear shoes. I don’t know who’s bright idea that was.

On the day that we did our performance, we danced on a black surface that was about as hot as a thousand fiery suns. Our tiny feet were BURNING. I wish I could find the VHS tape that my dad has of this. Its kind of funny/sad.

Let’s talk about nom noms

For tamales,

Read this blog from back in the day. It’s all about how delishuz these were and how I acquired them.

Please forgive this horrible photo. Notice to the upper center at them thar nachos. Also, that soup is pozole. For these,

This is a crappy burrito photo but the burrito was ten types of tasty. I love foods that are encased in handy pouches that you can eat. It’s like, my thing. It’s always burrito time and

Look at those corn chips and corn salsa. Look at it.

….for chips and salsa, all the time.

Here’s me doing a naughty on an elote.

…. for elotes. Mostly elotes are just roased corns but hellz to the yeah, they are delicious.

Wash everything down with a Mexi Coke. It has cane sugar instead of gross in it.

.. for Mexican food, all the time. It’s in my blood.

Will you be getting ur grub on for Cinco de Mayo?
