Buzznet Fashion Designer To Watch: Pretty Star Clothing

Buzznet is basically a breeding ground for the next Karl Lagerfelds and Vivienne Westwoods of the world. We have SO many talented fashion designers doing creative and amazing things, and this week we want to highlight some of them and their work through interviews and photos. Here are our Buzznet Designers to Watch…

Laura Brown of Pretty Star Clothing has been creating cute and colorful creations since 2007. Laura’s line grew into more than a hobby after she graduated from FIDM and won a design compeition in 2010. Her talents earned her a free website worth $1,500. And thus Pretty Star Clothing was born. Pretty Star caters to girls who want to wear sweets and treats they love, feeding their ever growing addiction to cuteness. When it comes to Laura Brown designs, her imagination is her only limitation!

Buzznet: Describe your own personal style in 10 words or less.

Laura Brown: Playful pastel colors with Japanese and vintage influences.

BN:What are some of your fashion must haves? What is something you can’t live without?

LB:Oh, so many! Rompers, bloomers to go under my obscenely short dresses, over the knee socks, and vintage maxi dresses for when I want to feel like a princess-but don’t feel like shaving my legs. Something I can’t live without? False lashes!

BN: Who are your favorite fashion icons?

LB: I wish I paid more attention to people in fashion but I don’t so this is a toughy. Let’s see, David Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane era. That’s pretty much the only famous fashion icon I consistently draw inspiration from. The rest of my fashion icons are my friends, who have incredible style.

BN: Describe your clothing line in 10 words or less.

LB: Cute and kitschy candy colored clothing for every day princesses!

BN: Where do you find your inspiration?

LB: I find a lot of my inspiration from Japanese fashion and subcultures, but recently I’ve been looking to the streets of my own city, Los Angeles, for inspiration. LA has an amazing art scene with lots of creative energy that you just can’t help but be inspired by. I also have some unconventional outlets for inspiration that include 80’s and 90’s cartoons such as Jem and My Little Pony. And of course the usual..unicorns, mermaids, etc.

BN: Tell us about your all-time favorite piece you have created and why it’s your absolute favorite.

LB: I still have to say that my favorite peice was the dress that I made for Sanrio for their Hello Kitty Three Apples Anniversarry fashion show. I made it about 2 years ago and while I don’t think it’s my best work to date, it is the piece that has by far done the most for me. Through that piece I met most of my friends and many people that turned out to be very helpful to me in my career. It was also just a really fun piece to make. I essentially took a basic two dimensional creature and turned her into a fully fitted and draped party dress.

BN: What are your plans for the future? Upcoming projects? Collaborations?

LB: I am keeping all of my options open and my expectations high for the future. This year I am looking to do my own fashion show as opposed to the group shows I usually do. I am also in the process of getting my clothes into a few boutiques and I’d like to start doing production so that I can offer certain products to more people in full size ranges.

BN: Where can we find (and buy!) your work?
