“Friday” by Rebecca Black: Arguably the Worst Song Ever.

Ark Music Factory, a record label that lets young artists record a track for a fee, is where the song “Friday” was born. Rebecca’s mother paid Ark Music Factory $2,000 for a package that included two pre-written songs. The rest is history… The music video for Friday has gotten over 20 million hits. On March 14th, the song was released on iTunes and since then, it has climbed the top 100 chart, landing at #39 (beating out JBiebs, who, according to an interview with Rebecca, is one of her favorite singers. Go figure). Rebecca has gotten numerous critical comments, some about the inane lyrics of the song, some about the over-use of Auto Tune, and some about her appearance. When I first watched the video for Friday, I honestly thought it was a satire, trying to convey how awful and processed music has become. In fact, Rolling Stone called it an “unintentional parody of modern pop.” Here are some of the lyrics:

7am, waking up in the morning Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal…

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly Fun, fun, think about fun You know what it is I got this, you got this My friend is by my right I got this, you got this Now you know it

Kickin’ in the front seat Sittin’ in the back seat Gotta make my mind up Which seat can I take?

’nuff said. What do you think of Friday and Rebecca Black?
