Valentine’s Day Playlist: New Skewl

These are mostly from the past few years. Check out my other Vday playlist for older tunes here.

1. If I Ever Feel Better – Phoenix

This song always does the trick. Still my favorite Phoenix song.

2. Pear Harbor Day by Sundays Best

Mushy 90’s emo with chimey guitar parts.

3. I’d have It Just The Way We Were by White Denim

White Denim are the best band out of Austin TX, and that’s a hard title to own. Love the drums and melody here.

4. When You Sleep by Memoryhouse (originally by My Bloody Valentine)

A simple version of MBV’s shoegaze classic recorded live in someone’s house.

5. Something About Us by Daft Punk

I like this song because it’s about embracing the moment. And embracing each other. Everyone seems to be out to write a novel. There’s as much beauty in writing a bunch of short stories.

6. What’s Real by DRI

DRI is a duo. Dude does the beats and the chica has the pipes. She was also in 90’s emo-pop band The Anniversary. I love the jazz samples and her melody here.

7. Beeswax by NazcarNation

Shameless self-promotion. You can download the EP here for free (just click “Buy Now” and enter 0).

8. Digital Love – Alphabeat (originally by Daft Punk)

The original is the best but I already have a Daft Punk song on this list.

9. Shelia – Atlas Sound

Bradford Cox is my hero.

10. When I Wake by The Changes

The entire debut album by these guys is amazing. You can play it all the way thru and not one bad song.

11. Talamak by Toro y Moi

Toro’s new album just dropped and his last one, Causers of This, was hands down my fave album of 2010. Here’s one of the many gems off of it.

12. Calendar Girl by Stars

If you are a girl, you will probably love this song, sung by Amy Millan. In additional to Stars, she also is (was) in Broken Social Scene (which also included Feist and Emily Haines of Metric as members).

13. Marry Me by St. Vincent

This is a great song but the remix by Etherea will blow your mind and you can get it here.
