The musical walk of Tokio Hotel (PART 2)

Continue our walk through the meaning of Tokio Hotel’s songs, we have seen the first three songs of SCHREI album, in the past blog, and now it’s time to analyze the next three one: Rette Mich, Freunde Bleiben and Ich Bin Nich’ Ich

SCHREI – From suburban band of Magdeburg to the most desired band of the world. (pt.2)

RETTE MICH

The sonorities

A slow taste with acoustic guitar arpeggio with a soft choral effect. The cello and the piano rends this ballad with a melancholy atmosphere. Like for Durch Den Monsun, until the final of the song appears a guitar in distortion to guarantee a more power and extent. One of the sadness songs of this album, 3rd single, with a Bill more mature in the video, for the re edition of Schrei, called Schrei So Laut Du Kannst.

The message

The songs explains overall the loss and the empty left by the love. To symbolize an ended relationship, a place out of the world is evocated (“Zum ersten mal allaine in unserem versteck”, “For the first time, alone in our hiding place”); Bill through this place observing the ruins of his love. If he asks loud the healing of his pain (“Komm und rette mich. Ich verbrenne innerlich”, “Come and rescue me, I’m burning inside”) his disenchanted words (“Ich seh noch unsere namen an der wand und wisch sie wieder weg”, “I still see our names on the wall and I delete them”) show that he was conscious the relationship was destined to fail and he needs something else to get well. The final of the song is clear: his lover and he don’t understand and in the end haven’t a lot in common (“Unsere Träume waren gelogen, und keine Träne echt. Hörst du mich? Hörst du mich nicht?”, “Our dreams were lies and no tears were sincere. Do you listen me or not?”). An extreme mature reflection about a failure of a couple even though it’s been written, at the time, by a kid. A story which usually happened in the life… “It’s the only sentimental ballad in the album. The song is weak because the lyrics talk about to a relationship with a bad ending, it was broke up” explains Tom. “Thanks to our sad experiences or to the mistakes we become more mature, more adult. The pain and the forgiveness are important source of inspiration for Tokio Hotel” adds Bill.

FREUNDE BLEIBEN

The sonorities

A light theme started from a quick and full of overdrive bass, followed to a guitar full of distortions. Fresh like a pepper mint chewing-gum, the song shows Tokio Hotel in their most young dimension. Something similar to a German version of No Doubt at the beginning of their career. The refrain is perfect for the stadiums, with a simple text articulated with a little bit hoarse Bill’s voice, and cantabile to a mad crowd. Fantastic the effect of angelic chorus in the bridge and in the end of the song. An hymn to the real friendship (really difficult to find in those days) and to be oneself.

The message

Bill & Tom revenge on all the boys teased them at school. The twins since their young age, around 7-8 years old started to imprint their style, and it’s difficult to think their classmates were nice and kind. (“Du wärst lieber tot als Bill”, “Better dead than to be like Bill”). Written like a imaginary talk between the singer and one of his classmate, the text doesn’t go easy and calls up to the perfection the daily tension that existed between twins Kaulitz and their classmates, it’s enough to think that their step father Gordon went to come back home the twins from school with the dog and the baseball bat (“Jeder Tag muss ich dich sehen, und die anderen die dich verstehen, du bist der geilste unter Vollidioten”, “I see you everyday with all those like you, in the idiot reign you are the king”). At school a lot of people have had similar situations. The text of this song is universal, everyone can reflects and, like Bill, feels the good things let out singing this song. Today, with the success of the band, these words have a new meaning. Most of a revenge against the past demons, Bill against on the unhealthy character of the friends of today which they weren’t yesterday and will not be tomorrow, if Tokio Hotel could fall down in the anonymity. “It’s a song against the hypocrite. The message is: it’s useless act to be my friend if you aren’t. today with us all are became gentle, and flatter us for to get something. For me, friendship is sacred and I have no time to loose with false and superficial people, which this work is full” tells Bill.

ICH BIN NICH’ ICH

The sonorities

Electro-rock shades for this song that starts until the first second with power and adrenaline at the pure state. Almost 4 minutes intense and for nothing boring, Bill sings with his rock voice and during the bridge the pressure touches the top of the excitement before to literally “eat” the final where Bill pushes his voice to the limit. A sounds a little bit different to the others but a perfect gift for the album.

The message

Found again Rette Mich’s themes (the unease of a relationship ended), but in a different dimension. Like a drug, love transformed the protagonist in another person rending him completely dependent from who he loves (“Ich lös mich langsam auf. Halt mich nich nehr aus”, “I’m melting slowly. I don’t support myself anymore. I can’t separate to you”) As if he has withdrawal symptoms, he knows that live his relationship make hurt to him (“Ich kann nicht mehr mit ansehen. Bin ichlos”, “I can’t look me anymore. I’m empty of myself”), although dependent, he is sad when he misses his sentimental “food” (“Meine Augen schauen mich müde an und finden keinen Trost”, “My eyes see me tired and don’t find any comfort”) and asks to stop to suffer (“Egal wo du bist. Komm und rette mich”, “Everywhere you are, come and rescue me”) even though he knows there’s no price to pay (“Das was jetzt noch von mir übrig ist. Will ich nicht sein”, “And this is all that remain in me, I won’t to be like this”). Bill tries to show is necessary stay independent to the others and keep own personality if you won’t wake up with psychological pain and suffer until death when the other decides to go away. “This song talks about love, and to hope but also to separation. Sometimes things don’t go how you want, and happens stories or relationships bring us to don’t recognize anymore who we are, to become something like a body without soul. When the things go in a good way, seem to know everything of ourselves. But when things turn bad, happen to forget who we are really” says Bill.
