Jean Paul Gaultier Fuels Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘N Roll. And Beth Ditto.

First of all, I would like to applaud Gaultier for giving Beth Ditto, lead singer of Gossip, and little miss rocker extrodinaire, a cameo appearance in his latest runway show.

JPG’s Spring 2011 RTW collection exuded high-end, Sunset Strip, “Hey look at me I party at The Whisky,” Rock and Roll. I would be lying if I said the “rocker” look is a new and unheard of concept. But unlike Balmain’s latest creation, a tired Punk collectio n full of safety pins and ripped tights, Gaultier was innovative in his fabric choices—a gauzy, floral fabric was paired with what appears to be skin-tight black satin pants and knee-high lace up boots. Sheer floral is not what comes to mind when you think of rock and roll, but the look is completely and effortlessly edgy. Of course there’s going to be the leather, heavy eye-makeup and Joan Jett haircuts. But Gaultier incorporates these tired elements of a pretty tired concept in a fresh new way.

Is Jean Paul Gaultier’s Rock ‘N Roll inspired collection unoriginal or innovative?
