Buzznet Talks To Pop Star ROBYN About Prince, Bras, and Ugly Shoes

It’s widely known that Swedish people make the best pop music (also known for: affordable furniture, meatballs, and of course, the Battle of the Teutoborg Forest). Thus it’s no surprise that the Konungariket Sverige produced international pop star Robyn. The daughter of two theater actors, she was discovered in her teens and had put out her first album, Robyn Is Here by the tender age of 18. Ever since she beseeched the world “show me love, show me life” Robyn has been a star. After spending some time in the mainstream manufctured pop machine, broke out on her own in 2005 with her own label, Konichiwa Records. On her own she was able to break out in a new electro-pop direction, and has since collaborated with an ecclectic mix of producers and musicians, including The Knife, Kleerup, and Diplo. Earlier this year Robyn announced that she was planning to release three albums in 2010, and after we’ve heard and loved Body Talk Pt 1 and Pt 2, we can’t wait for the release of Body Talk Part 3 late this November. Over the years Robyn has become known not only for her soulful voice and party jams, but also for her fearless sense of personal style. We had a chance to chat with the white blonde icon:

BUZZNET: Who are your style icons, people whose style you admire?

ROBYN: I admire Prince’s style because he’s one of those artists that always dressed like himself. Even in the beginning when he made the “Dirty Mind” album he basically looked like a flasher with his long trench coat and basically nothing underneath. Being this short black man I can just imagine how brave he must have been to try to pull that off in the beginning of the 80s. I think that’s kind of like the thing I admire in other people’s dressing, when they’re brave enough to express their personalities even if it’s not what people may think is beautiful.

BN: What is your favorite item of clothing?

R: Hmm…it must be I think bras. Good bras make me feel happy.

BN: Bras are important.

R: Bras are functional and they have a purpose. I think functional clothing is probably my favorite. When it actually has a purpose, you know what I mean? Like military jackets…or like wedges, they look nice but they also make me taller.

BN: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?

R: These southern European like Ferrari shoes. They’re like the modern upgrade of a sneaker but they look weird. They’re really silly.

BN: Would you ever have long hair again?

R: I don’t think so. I definitely want to shave my head sometime though. I might grow it out as far a bob, but no longer than that. Short hair just works for me.

BN: Can you describe your look in three words or less?

R: No.

BN: Perfect.
