Hungry: Model Crystal Renn’s Amazing Story

I went to Borders the other day, trying to find And I Don’t Want To Live This Life by Deborah Spungen (Nancy Spungen’s mom), but it wasn’t in stock (ugh), probably because it was released in the 90’s. So I went up to the memoir/biography section just to look around and found a book called Hungry by the famous model Crystal Renn. The book is about Crystal’s struggle with anorexia and self esteem. During her bout with anorexia, she weighed only 98 pounds and stood at 5′ 9″. Still, her agency told her that “the thighs need to come down.” Crystal eventually realized she was slowly killing herself, and started eating again.

Crystal’s story made me realize how ruined America is in terms of social acceptance and body image. Though Crystal is now a size 12 (the size an average American woman wears) and completely gorgeous, she talks about how some websites have described her as a “beached whale” and how a stylist at a shoot once complained about having to style a “fat girl.” The book also brings up issues on the lack of racial diversity in fashion magazines and on the runway. Crystal is with Ford Models and has appeared in Vogue, ad campaigns for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Dolce and Gabbana, and the on cover of Elle and Harper’s Bazaar.

Definitely pick up a copy of this book!
