Long Live the Car Crash Hearts
Ever since Fall Out Boy announced they were “taking a break,” there’s been speculation from fans about what exactly that MEANT. The word “hiatus” was shunned by the band, but they also didn’t say they were breaking up.
The announcements that Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley were both recording with new projects was met without much worry. However, when Patrick Stump recently announced his own non-FOB project, people began to talk and worry. And now we have a statement from Pete Wentz himself:
i dont know the future of fall out boy. its embarrassing to say one thing and then have the future dictate another. as far as i know fall out boy is on break. (no one wants to say the “h” word). as much as i dont have a solo project, i also cant predict that id ever play in fall out boy again. not due to personal relationships as much as a band we grew apart. in this statement id like to include there is the possibility that fob will play again with out me or i will be a part of it when everyone is on the same page. it is no ones fault and there is no animosity about the decision. i felt as fans you deserve to know. there is no singular reason for this. the side projects or bands are supported by all members of the band. i am the single biggest fan of fob and if this is our legacy than so be it. i am proud of it.
Before anyone overreacts: this does not mean “Fall Out Boy is over and you can all go home now.” It means just what it means, there’s no definite future for Fall Out Boy, no plans to go back into the studio or tour again. But it’s also something else: that no matter what there’s no anger between Pete, Patrick, Andy and Joe and that the decision to shelf FOB wasn’t out of anger but out of not feeling together as a band anymore. And in the end, Pete makes something very, very clear: even if they don’t do anything more than this, what they’ve done is amazing.
A Grammy nomination, world-wide tours, hit singles, best selling albums, a Presidential Ball, collaborations with Elvis Costello, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Babyface, and more, a ton of young bands they’ve inspired and promoted and a fan base that needs umbrellas on the inside, that chooses between love and sympathy, that will always stay gold. That’s the legacy Fall Out Boy leaves behind.
“Crowds are won and lost and won again but our hearts beat for the diehards.” If and when you decide to be Fall Out Boy again, the believers will be waiting for you. Because if nothing else, you taught us believers never die. Thank you, Andy, Joe, Pete and Patrick, for every album, every video, every stage show, every interview, photoshoot, magazine cover, meet and greet, blog or Twitter post, everything you’ve given to your fans.
