King of Pop Michael Jackson Passes Away at 50

It’s been confirmed by the Los Angeles Times that Michael Jackson, ground breaking pop star and highly influential musician, has passed away at the age of 50. The cause of death was apparently cardiac arrest.

Jackson was found earlier today in his home by paramedics. He was taken to the hospital in what is described as a “deep coma” and died without waking.

The story initially broke via gossip website TMZ.com and was dismissed as rumor by a highly hopeful online community, including many celebrities on Twitter. However, the LA Times has confirmed that TMZ’s story is true and that Jackson has passed away.

Although more recently known for his tumultuous personal life and legal troubles, Jackson was the man who defined what it was to be a modern day pop star. His numerous hit songs such as “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” “Black or White” and more influenced an entire generation of musicians and will continue to do so for years to come. His videos were creative, cinematic and usually innovated in their filming techniques. Jackson was a talented singer, dancer and maintained trademarks such as his “moonwalk” dance move and his wearing of a single glove while performing.

Many have begun posting comments and memorials online, however I am choosing to quote Travis McCoy‘s blog to end mine:

HE WAS PETER PAN AND THE REASON 90% OF TODAYS MALE POP-STARS HAVE CAREERS……IF IT IS TRUE, AFTER THE CRAZY 2 WEEKS I JUST HAD, I AM GOING INTO HIDING FOR A FEW DAYS…..LONG LIVE THE KING….RESPECT THE MAN, LAST TIME I CHECK YOUR NAME WASN’T GOD SO LEAVE THE JUDGING TO THAT GUY PLEASE-xoxo-TRAVIE

Wishing the best to Jackson’s surviving family and friends. The King of Pop is dead…long live the King of Pop.
