Community Discussion: What Do Your Tattoos Mean?

We’ve all seen them. They are either testaments to bad taste or attributions to awesome. They can be hidden tastefully or placed strangely and strategically. They are tattoos. Most tattoos have a story, so let’s hear them!

In recently posting a photo entitled “Heart Surgery,” the tattoos on my arms were exposed (as was much of me) for all the world to see. This got Buzznet member Angelcrossmarie to wondering what other members of Buzznet had themselves inked with and if there were any significant meanings behind their artwork. While Angelcrossmarie is but a spry young teen, she admits a long time fascination for body art.

My first tattoo was done in El Paso, Texas at the tender age of 18. Much of my later artwork was done in Los Angeles, California, by various artists. My theme seems to be all things that pertain to the wonderful Mexican celebration of “Dia de Los Muertos.” This holiday is a time when families come together to honor their deceased loved ones by offering prayers, food, beverages, and other mementos from their lives in an effort to communicate with those in the hereafter.

For me, this is when my sisters and I galavant around the city and view all the on goings associated with Dia de Los Muertos. The holiday takes place around Halloween and for us, it is like an extension of our favorite time of the year. This holiday also mocks the idea of death by making it seem comical. This is done so that one does not fear their passing.

Some of my tattoos remind me to ask for help, to remember to love, to enjoy my time on Earth, and remind me of where I came from and where I am going. I plan on getting more but that isn’t any time soon.

Tattoos can be private in their meanings and maybe some of you don’t want to share your stories of being drunk and dared to get that embarassing Minnie Mouse tattoo on that place the bathing suit covers. If, however, you comfortable with telling us about your tattoos, explain away!
