Warped Tour ’08: Nonprofits – Another Great Reason to Spend Money on a Ticket

OK, so really Warped tickets aren’t expensive. But if you’re like me, you might have issues along the lines of, “But I could use that money to pay bills!” Well, yeah, you could. But consider this: Warped Tour isn’t just about music and alternative culture. It also provides a venue for nonprofits to reach out to concertgoers.

So, if you need to soothe your mental guilt trip, make sure you stop by some of the nonprofits on this year’s Warped. Since they’ve pretty much got something for everyone. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL LOVE CAPTAIN PLANET:

The Warped Tour Eco Initiative: Now that the world has once again realized, “Hey, wait, we’ve only got one planet, maybe we should stop screwing it up,” going green and being eco-friendly are coming to the forefront of causes once again. The eco initiative encourages going green in real life by helping the tour to be as ecologically friendly as possible. Make sure to visit the Web site for even more information on this fantastic group.FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO FEEL ALIVE:

To Write Love on Her Arms: A fantastic group. The group’s aim is to help those struggling with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts find hope and help with their issues. Probably most famous for their T-shirts, the group’s street team will be spreading the word at Warped as well. They have a history of partnering with bands and tours, so working with Warped is no stretch of the imagination. Check out their Web site and their MySpace for more information.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO IMITATE GERARD WAY:

Music Saves Lives: A group that believes that the music industry can help spread the word about life-saving causes and can, in turn, save lives. They mostly focus on blood donation and bone marrow donation, neither of which you can actually do at Warped Tour. But you can sign up to donate bone marrow (you must be at least 18) and get information on donating blood and other ways you can save a life or two. Visit their site and Myspace for more.

FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE BOOBIES:

Keep a Breast: A group dedicated to helping spread awareness about breast cancer that focuses on making plaster molds of women’s torsos. By combining art and advocacy, they not only spread awareness of breast cancer but also teach about the importance of regular medical exams and self-examinations (you know, that kinda embarrassing stuff you’re supposed to do in the shower?) to help catch breast cancer in the early stages. Make sure to visit their Web site for more information and archives of their art.

Boarding for Breast Cancer: Another boob-health-centric group, but this one combines action sports with advocacy. They urge an active lifestyle combined with early detection. They also reinforce that breast cancer “is not a death sentence.” They are partnered with and/or sponsored by some of the bigger names in action sports, such as DC, Billabong, Roxy and Element, as well as companies such as Urban Decay cosmetics (side note: I’m a huge fan and recommend spending the money for their stuff. Worth it) and Skullcandy. Make sure to check out their Web site!

FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE NO ONE SHOULD BE LOST OR FORGOTTEN:

Invisible Children: A cause championed famously by the members of Fall Out Boy, Invisible Children is focused on helping children affected by civil wars in Uganda. The group focuses on making sure these children can receive an education, ensure employment for their future and break the cycle of violence in their area. Be sure to visit their Web site for more information.

Of course, that’s hardly ALL of the nonprofits. That’s just a very, very small sampling. If you have one that you’d like to get the word out about, leave a comment and some information here and I’ll add it in*. Because if we’re going to make the world a better place, we might as well do it while rocking out with various parts of our anatomy out.

(*except for PETA. One, they have enough support; and two, well, just read this, OK?)
