Re: “Whichever illness You Have” bulletin

Look. I get that you have time on your hands. I get that some surveys and quizzes are fun. I get that in the whole process of self-discovery is tough and sometimes seemingly pointless activities like that help us understand ourselves.

But bragging/competing/poking fun at disorders and illnesses? Come on now, girls.

For those of you out of the loop, there’s a bulletin going around titled, “Whichever illness You Have The Most X’s in, As Your Bulliton’s Title Write. I Am ______ . That is My illness” The categories are Anorexia, ADHD, Bulimia, Bipolar disorder, conduct disorder, OCD and schizophrenia. There are 6-10 “symptoms” aside each category– and as someone who has studied psychology, has been sent to trainings (because I worked with teens at my last job), and been to therapy myself, I can tell you these ‘symptoms’ were NOT drawn up by a professional.

If you are genuinely concerned that you may be affected by one of these disorders, there are a WEALTH of resources. School counselers, forums, doctors, reading material, hotlines, etc.

But I’m calling bullsh*t on that bulletin.

I get that you’re trying to figure out who you are. I get that adhering to any label feels better than now knowing sometimes. I get that you’re reaching out because you don’t know how else to get attention. I honestly get it.

Now knock it off.
